Heart of the Goddess
A Black Swan Temple Salon

Open Secret Bookstore, 923 C Street, San Rafael
$15 in advance, $20 at the door

“Join High Priestess Heather Salmon and Rev. Donny Regal for a special Black Swan Temple Salon featuring guest co-creators Dr. Rev. Devaa Haley of the Shift Network and Visionary Artist Daniel Holeman.  Venture with us on an odyssey into the Heart of the Goddess through sacred music, dance, crystal singing bowls, sound healing and visionary art.

Heather and Donny are renowned for their work as Mystical Alchemy prayerformance healing artists and spiritual directors and co-founders of the Black Swan Temple and Mystery School.

It is their great honor to be joined by Devaa Haley, a gifted spiritual guide, musician and host of the highly successful Inspiring Women's Summit.  Her debut album, Sacred Alchemy is a breakthrough for the awakening and liberation of the Divine Feminine.  It brings alive 13 faces of the Goddess with songs that range from sexy and untamed to reverential and tender.  We will dive deeply into some of these archetypes through her sacred music.
Also, meet and experience visionary artist Daniel Holeman's profound sacred imagery which has developed through lifelong exploration of consciousness and devotion to self-realization.   Daniel is a wayshower and his work invites you to dive into a deeper dimension of consciousness. The imagery stirs forgotten awareness of a place felt to be HOME - a warm, familiar and heartfelt state of mind. His work has been used on TV and videos, book and CD covers, magazines, prints, posters, cards and the internet.”

The Accordion Babes Revue
Woman-Powered Fun Folk and Rock Cabaret
featuring the Red Hot Chachkas, Whiskey and Women, and Amber Lee Baker
Thursday, June 27, 8:00PM
Freight and Salvage, 2020 Addison Street, Berkeley, 510-644-2020
$18.50 in advance, $20.50 at the door
“They’re a band! They’re a pin-up calendar! They’re a band and a pin-up calendar! The Accordion Babes are Renee de la Prade on accordion and guitar, Joan Wilson Rueter on accordion and fiddle, Skyler Fell on accordion, Diana Strong on accordion, Amber Lee Baker on accordion and glockenspiel, and Aharon Wheels Bolsta, the odd man out, on drums. The show is more than accordions - though there are accordions galore - it’s a multitude of mult-talented, multi-instrument-playing musicians making merry on a magical mix of accordion-friendly songs - folk, French cabaret, jazz, klezmer, zydeco, Irish, and rock and roll. Renee began the revue and calendar project with the mission of taking the accordion from Lawrence Welk and giving it to Sophia Loren. This year’s theme is Heroes, Villains and Divas.

Renee sings, stomps, and plays button accordion with the deep passion of a she-warrior. Her style draws from folk dance music, zydeco, and old-school rock and roll. She tours the world playing solo, duo, and with the Cajun Americana trio Whiskey and Women. Joan is a founding member of the San Francisco-based sea music group the Barbary Ghosts, and also sings and plays fiddle in Whiskey and Women. Skyler sings and plays accordion with the HoboGobblins and Tumbleweed Time Machine. Diana is the accordionist for the klezmer fusion group Red Hot Chachkas and performs solo at Cafe Divine. Her duo Sweet Moments of Confusion released their debut album last year. Amber Lee leads Amber Lee and the Anomalies, bringing accordion into the realm of singer-songwriter cabaret.”

Vintage Invasion
Friday, June 28, 8:00PM-Midnight and the fourth Friday of each month
The Finnish Brotherhood Hall, 1970 Chestnut Street, berkeley
$7

“Vintage Invasion - where the old dances invade a new generation
Our crowd is growing and thriving... a really positive atmosphere!

Have you ever waltzed to Metallica or danced a polka to Lady Gaga? Yes?  Then you know what a great time it is, and we will see you there!  No?  Well it's never too late to start.  Since we have hundreds of years of waltz music to choose from, the variety makes a wonderful, festive evening.  This is a casual, neighborhood party: a chance to meet people, bounce around, and generally make merry.  We'll have a potluck; you are welcome to bring snacks if you like.  Your hosts always bring the punch and water.  No alcohol, please, as we sometimes have dancers under 21 attending.

All are welcome for the lesson, so we can get you moving and ready to sail across the floor.  If you're new to dancing we promise to be patient with you, and if you have waltzed before we will improve your technique.  After class, during the dance party, we will still be available to help you with what we taught you, and introduce you to some of our regulars.  They are well skilled, but don't be shy about asking them to dance with you too.  They'll probably be happy for the chance to show off. :)

8:00-9:00PM = Lesson in Vintage Waltz - no partner or experience needed
9:00PM-Midnight = Dance to Persephone and guest DJs playing lots of waltzes, and a little bit of many other partner dances.”

Fairy and Human Relations Congress
Communication and Co-Creation with Devas, Nature Spirits and the Faery Realms
Friday - Sunday, June 28-30
Skalitude Retreat, Twisp, Washington
See website for registration details

"The Fairy and Human Relations Congress affects the planet by joining with the nature, devic and other higher realms to bring more peace, love and understanding into the world. Our goal is not to escape the outer world but to positively affect it. At this time of multiple crises affecting humanity we feel it is very important to seek alliances with as many light forces as possible in other realms. Mother Earth and the fairy realms ARE big players in what is transpiring on the planet. Though many deny their existence, the numbers of people who are tuning into the spiritual realms and to the nature spirit/fairy/devic realms is increasing by leaps and bounds. The Congress is one of the vanguard events bringing these people together. We are not a frivolous event although we do have lots of fun and costume up. Our intent is communication and cooperation, not only for our personal selves, but for all of humanity. We are allying ourselves with Mother Earth and with the forces for peace and love on planet Earth.

The 2013 Congress: Igniting Forces of Connection and Manifestation
The time has come for us to consciously unite with our non-physical cohorts and create the reality we want here on Planet Earth! This year we bring our fully human selves into loving relationship with the fairy and devic realms to strengthen our powers of manifestation in joyful union!”

Hardy.

Week 1: The Lady Scribblers, a Historical Comedy
by Michaela Goldhaber
Directed by Heather Ondersma

Housewives and poets raised aloft their quills,
challeng’d the world to look beyond their frills
and dared to mount the stage with their brave words.
Soaring on their wits rose these bright birds.

London in the 1690s:  Women playwrights are clamoring to get their work produced and actors are fighting with tyrannical management.  The Lady Scribblers is a historical comedy that follows a triumvirate of women playwrights who join forces with rebel actors to found a new theatre.  Scribblers is peppered with actual history, salted with rhyming couplets, and further seasoned by Restoration Comic style.”

Litha Faire
Saturday, June 29, 10:00AM-5:00PM
Quaker Meeting House, 225 Rooney Street, Santa Cruz
$7, children under 12 free

“Litha Faire 2013 Midsummer Magic Psychic and Craft Faire

Welcome to Litha Faire!
A Summer Solstice Celebration to Honor the Enchantment of Midsummer

Greetings Litha Faire Participants and Guests!
Litha Faire is committed to the service of humanity and giving back to those who serve our community. We are pleased to announce that the Community Bridges Meals on Wheels program will be receiving all the proceeds from this year's raffle. Wonderful prizes have been donated!

The Litha Faire Group is a coalition of local artisans, psychics, healers, performers, and people who care about healing the planet.

The Litha Faire project was borne out of a need to unite people of like mind in a positive way. The economic downturn in our country has had negative repercussions for all of us. Many of us are feeling downtrodden due to the recent cycle of events.

Our group has chosen to approach these challenging times from a positive perspective and view it as an opportunity for a spiritual renaissance!

Although it feels as if Pandora’s box has been opened and unleashed in the world once again, Litha Faire is here to remind all of us of the one thing left in the box after all the calamity had passed… and that was…
HOPE

We may not be able to change the world instantaneously, but we can change the way we live in it.

Come celebrate the enchanted life with us this summer solstice.

Help us fundraise for the Pregnant Mare Rescue!    All proceeds from the Midsummer raffle  will go directly to PMR.  Click on the link above for more information on the Pregnant Mare Rescue and upcoming events!”

“Rhythmix Island Arts is proud to present Marimba to Minyo, featuring Taiko fusion plus Japanese folks songs, Festival Dances and much more!

Be transported to Japan’s mountain and fishing villages with traditional folk songs and colorful festival dances. Formed in 2006, Ensohza Minyoshu is a Japanese folk ensemble based in the San Francisco Bay Area, performing songs and dances that evoke the festival spirit of Japan and the character of its diverse rural communities. With lively vocals, bamboo flutes, shamisen and taiko drums, Ensohza Minyoshu's musicians set the beat for a program of folk songs and dances that showcase Japan's ancient and spirited community traditions to celebrate harvests, honor ancestors, and cheer hardworking laborers.

Maze Daiko blends global inspiration with a wide range of percussion to create contemporary interpretations for taiko. This dynamic ensemble layers intricate rhythms and fills the stage with vitality and energetic choreography. Maze Daiko performs original compositions influenced by world cultures including Japan, Africa and Cuba with the physical elegance and vibrant sounds of taiko. The group’s name is derived from the Japanese word for ‘mix’ (Mazeru) and taiko (daiko) is the Japanese word for ‘drum’. In collaboration with Ensohza for this special evening, the two collectives explore new dimensions of traditional Japanese movement and expression.

The members of Maze Daiko have toured throughout the U.S. and Japan - Janet Koike, Kathryn Cabunoc, Tina Blaine, Carolyn West, and special guest, Yumi Ishihara all have years of collective experience in other taiko or musical groups including San Jose Taiko, San Francisco Taiko Dojo, Emeryville Taiko, D'CuCKOO and the Rhythmix Ensemble. Ensohza features Takashi Sugimoto on vocals, Karl Young playing Shakuhachi and fue, Clare ‘Jiro’ Hess on Shamisen and fue, Nina Sazevich on Taiko and dance along with dancers Sue Hirabayashi, Jennifer Lau, Laura Rawson, and Irma Spars.

Time Travel Weekends
in Historic Old Sacramento
Saturday-Sunday, June 29-30,
and every weekend through August 25
Historic Old Sacramento, 101 I Street, Sacramento

“Get ready to step back in time when the past mingles with the present once again in Old Sacramento! Visitors to Old Sacramento will enjoy lively and interactive street theatre as part of the hugely popular Time Travel Weekends that debuted last year to much applause. The streets of Old Sacramento will come alive with talented performers who put on spontaneous and elaborate skits and performances. Plus, visitors won’t want to miss the highly entertaining Old West stage shows happening daily including the much acclaimed Golden Melodeon Review in the Eagle Theatre.

As you stroll through Old Sacramento on weekends July through August, you might just chance upon historic re-enactments complete with wagons, wild characters with heroes and villains, children’s pioneer craft activities, historic gambling, bowling, juggling, singing, dancing and other forms of musical mastery, military encampments, mining camps, parades, historic events, medicine shows, Civil War cannon firings, and much, much more!”

A lot of the performers in this program are Renaissance Faire and/or Dickens Fair folk!

Director Robert Young, who may look familiar to you if you’ve ever met Mr. Dickens himself, or attended a Mysterium Om ritual at PantheaCon, says:
“THE CURTAIN'S GOING UP - on a new season of Time Travel Weekends in Sacramento City.  The very first melodrama to open the Eagle Theatre in 1849, 'The Bandit Chief', will be reborn on that stage every afternoon. An entertaining show of variety acts will also take stage - jugglers, Shakespearean actors, medicine show, can can, music hall and much more - concluding in the stirring pageant 'Triumph of Eureka'.  Mr. Mark Twain himself will hold forth with his droll humor and entertaining tales. The streets will be bustling with wagons, carriages, parades, music and lively characters.  Will you be there?”

Ludus Danielis: The Play of Daniel
$30 general, $25 student/senior, $15 Children age 12 and under
Tickets available in advance online and at the door forty-five minutes before show times, depending on availability
Saturday, June 29, 8:00PM
All Saints' Episcopal Church, 555 Waverley Street, Palo Alto
Sunday, June 30, 4:00PM
Congregation Beth El, 1301 Oxford Street, Berkeley

“Ludus Danielis, The Play of Daniel, was written by students at the Beauvais Cathedral in France some time between 1227-1234 and is one of the earliest examples of what we now call opera.  Its poetic text closely follows the story of the prophet Daniel at the court of the Persian king Belshazzar and is filled with satraps, soldiers, angels... and of course lions.  Our Assistant Music Director, Katherine McKee, will conduct this semi-staged production and will be joined by members of our dance troupe and an exciting array of instrumentalists playing shawm, curtal, recorders, bowed psaltery, harp, lute and all sorts of percussion.  Rabbi Reuben Zellman (also a San Francisco Renaissance Voices tenor who will be singing the part of Habbakuk) gives a pre-concert lecture a half-hour before each performance.

Tickets are already selling briskly and we hope you can join us for this exciting ending to our ninth season and a great show for the entire family!”

Please note: this is a fun activity for girls AND boys (super-hero, action-figure pixies? Yes, indeed.)

Parents should sign up for a half-hour slot, arrive a few minutes before start time, and stay present in the store during the class. A few walk-in spots will be available, but because of the popularity of this tiny world we suggest you sign up to reserve a spot.

Silk Road House, 1944 University Avenue, Berkeley, 510-981-0700

“The Silk Road House presents Tales from the Steppes, an hour of stories from Central Asia for families performed by storyteller Dana Sherry.

Our guest will bring you and your children on an imaginary journey to the Central Asia of folk tales, where mischievous sheep’s ears come to life, poor but clever brothers amaze mighty khans, and peris help princesses achieve their heart’s desire.

Dana Sherry was once simply a respectable historian of the Caucasus and Central Asia. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis, and has taught at U.C. Davis, Stanford University, and St. Mary’s College. However, she has developed a second life as a storyteller, where she crafts adult stories that transform historical events into tales of wonder and horror. She also tells traditional and literary tales to young audiences. In her school-age programs, stories become a way for children to experience empathy, community, creativity, and joy.”

The Liar
presented by Livermore Shakespeare Festival
Sunday, June 30, 7:00PM
Concannon Vineyard, 4590 Tesla Road, Livermore
see website for ticket details

“The Liar by David Ives,
adapted from the comedy by Pierre Corneille, Directed by Lisa A. Tromovitch.

For Ives, one of America's better dramatic humorists, translating the fun of Pierre Corneille's 1643 French comedy was an act of respectful reinvention.  The result is a scrubbed, vivacious script salted with hints of cheeky self-awareness.

Performances begin at 7:30PM Thursdays and Fridays, and at 7:00PM on Saturdays and Sundays.  Picnic area opens at 5:30PM.  Recommended for ages 10 and up.

Livermore Shakespeare Festival takes place at Concannon Vineyard, an elegant winery in the heart of Livermore Valley Wine Country. Actors perform in front of a two-story, Queen-Anne style Victorian home. Before the show and during intermission, you can sample award-winning wines in two tasting rooms. Enjoy a pre-show picnic on the lawn or enjoy pre-show small plates in Concannon's Underdog Wine Bar (RESERVATIONS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED). For the optimal pre-theater dining experience, the Underdog Wine Bar recommends making a reservation for 2 hours prior to the performance start time. Reservations for the Underdog Wine Bar can be made by calling (925) 583-1581. During the show, sip wine in the seating area as you experience Shakespeare against a background of vineyards and hills.

Note: Beverages, wine and food are available for purchase onsite at the Underdog Wine Bar and the Tasting Room. Due to state liquor laws, no alcohol without the winery label is allowed on site. Please contact the Underdog Wine Bar at (925) 583-1581 for questions regarding food. This season at the Livermore Shakespeare Festival, shows are adult-oriented and not appropriate for children under 10 years of age. Babes in arms and children in strollers are not permitted. Children 12 and under are permitted with parents. We recommend acquainting children with appropriate theatre behavior before coming. If you have any specific questions about the suitability of a show for your child, please contact our office at (925) 443-BARD. Climate varies nightly, so please dress in layers. Blankets are rented and sold at the event.”

Please donate at the highest level that you can, which allows others of lesser means to also participate (and supports the teacher and teachings). In the Buddhist tradition generous giving is a practice that is considered a foundation for our spiritual life. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

If you are committed to coming for the whole series, but can't donate in this way on the website, please email anushkasangha@gmail.com with your first and last name and some indication that you are committed to coming for the whole series and we will register you. (Sometimes people sign up with no commitment and don't come, and it deprives someone else of a seat in the class, since space is limited, so we are trying to avoid that situation!)
There may be some swapping around of topics between the weeks Anushka is teaching, but we will cover all eight steps!
Chairs will be provided, but if you would like to sit on a cushion on the ground BYOC (bring your own cushion).”

Fourth of July at the  Berkeley Marina
Thursday, July 4, 12:00-10:00PM
Cesar Chavez Park, 11 Spinnaker Way, Berkeley
Free

“The 4th of July is a great day to have a lot of fun. The biggest party is at the Berkeley Marina and Cesar Chavez Activity Park from 12:00-10:00PM with all kinds of free fun! Adventure Playground, always a favorite, is open 11:00AM-8:00PM. Get your face painted, try the giant slide, or splash in the water at the beach!

There’s live entertainment from noon until 9:30PM on the main stage including the US Air Force Band - The Blue Yonders; American Glitz by Dance/10; The John Brothers Piano Company; St. Gabriel’s Celestial Brass Band; Stafford and Sturdevant’s Jazz Americana; and Violinist Kippy Marks with LoveMarksMusic. On The Buddy Club Stage in Shorebird Park you’ll find world-renowned juggling and magic acts. Tucked in here and there you will discover Afro Cuban Drumming; InSteel - Caribbean Steel Drums; Sean Lee - A One-Man Band; UCA Capoeira; and Coventry and Kaluza’s Circus Arts.

Cesar Chavez Activity Park on the north side of the marina holds a day of physical fun with clear Zorbing balls that you step inside of to roll down the hill; a Slackline Stunt Show by artists who were in the Superbowl Half-time Show; a climbing wall, bungee run, jousting, a bungee trampoline, and lots more. Additional food booths and a preview of the Giant Show Kites from the Berkeley Kite Festival make it a super fun area.

There’s crafts, yummy food, free dragon boat rowing from 2:00-6:00PM, massages, pony rides, a petting zoo, giant slides and bubble ball rides all culminating in the grand fireworks over the water from the end of the Berkeley Pier at 9:30PM.

Let’s hear it for the red, white, and blue... but keep it green, too. The party shouldn’t leave the environment trashed. If you can, bring your own dishes - Frisbees double as plates! A bandana is your cloth napkin to use at all of the international food booths and trucks. With water stations located around the event, you can refill your own reusable bottle and keep a lot of plastic out of the landfill. Use the recycling stations located throughout the marina for your disposables.

Getting There
Ride your bike over the Berkeley bicycle overpass and use the free valet parking by Richmond Spokes near Adventure Playground. Or take AC Transit from the Downtown Berkeley BART station. This only runs until 6:30PM, however and does not come back into the marina. To leave on AC Transit after the fireworks, walk out over the freeway overpass to University and 5th Street.

Free admission. Alcohol-free event. Free valet bicycle parking. No cars in or out after 7:00PM but lots of free parking before then.”

Exploratorium After Dark: Boom
Thursday, July 4, 6:00-10:00PM
Exploratorium, Pier 15, San Francisco
$15, 18+

“What’s the science behind fireworks? How are implosions different from explosions? What happens when hot water is combined with liquid nitrogen? The Exploratorium’s After Dark: Boom celebrates July 4th with rumbling, roaring thunder, the resonant thrum of taiko drumming, the explosive potential of liquid nitrogen, and spectacular explorations of other boom-related activities and exhibits.

Learn how the percussive power of pyrotechnics is a time-honored and indispensible feature of every Andean fiesta at a special screening of Gustavo Vazquez’s Playing with Fire (Jugando con Fuego). In the community of Celendin, high in the Peruvian Andes, a family of rural firework makers overcomes accident and adversity to create a towering spectacle that embodies the flamboyant spirit of their community. Through this hour-long documentary, filmmaker Vazquez and co-producer Keith Muscutt create a tribute to a vanishing and under-appreciated art form.”
