Goddess Festival
Friday-Sunday, September 5-7
Redwood Forest in Santa Cruz area
see website for detailed registration information

“Goddess Festival 2014
Health, Wealth and Wisdom: Empowering Women, Cultivating Sisterhood

Join us for a blissful weekend filled with magic, sisterhood, and deep connection to the rhythms of the Earth!

Once again, we gather together in the coastal redwoods of California among the enchanted energies of Mother Nature to honor the Goddess, ourselves, and one another.

For three days we live together in this sacred setting, partaking of powerful workshops, rituals, singing, drumming, dancing, and the dynamic vitality of female-focused intentional community. Guided by world renowned Priestesses and leaders, you can learn to identify and use herbs, hone your skills in the ancient Amazon art of archery, contribute your voice as we pass the rattle, develop ritual skills, empower yourself through the sacred archetypes of women, and much, much more.

Each day we offer a variety of workshops and opportunities for learning.  Choose to attend as few or as many as you like, or simply relax - swim in the pool, hike through the woods, listen to the music, enter into deep discussion, shop with our hand-selected vendors, or just sit quietly and meditate in this sacred space.

Evenings are reserved for us to come together in the Gaia Bowl, our sacred ritual space of Fire and Light.  It is here that we call to the Goddess and weave our magic; honor and invoke our Foremothers; hold Initiation and Ordination rituals; and drum, dance, and sing our prayers - for ourselves and the Earth! All of nature is just a step outside your cabin door.

All meals are prepared for us - there is no work duty, no food to cook, no dishes to do. Your only responsibility is to come with an open heart and open mind, find connection through Sisterhood, and share your energies in this movement for social change.  Come and meet us Between the Worlds, outside of mundane space and time, to find rejuvenation and renewed purpose!”

As a visitor to our Faire, wander around and interact with a myriad of villagers from 1578, make herbal soap or try your hand at weaving while listening to a wandering minstrel… enjoy some ice cold lemonade while watching the falcons and learning about their role in Renaissance farming, sit back and take in a short Shakespeare performance while feasting on a hearty, rustic lunch.

Come celebrate the Feast of St. Michael (Michaelmas) - when rents are due, wages are paid, and the crops have been gathered and stored for the coming Winter. It's time for the people of the little town of Fenford to relax and enjoy some well-earned recreation, while giving thanks for a bountiful harvest.

Queen Elizabeth has been out hunting with her courtiers, and her Master of Horse, Robert Dudley, The Earl of Leicester has arranged a surprise for her. He intends to lead her back to his manor by way of the celebration. Here she will join the revels of her loving subjects, and be entertained in their lusty, country fashion.”

“It was 1975, and comedian Jose Simon had a dream. Barbra Streisand did it. A number of rock 'n' roll bands had done it, too. Even the symphony gave it a go. Free outdoor concerts were becoming more commonplace in music. So, why not one featuring comedians? A free outdoor performance in The City that is considered the cradle of civilization for comedy would be a great way for local comedians to say thank you to their fans.

It took a few years and a lot of cooperation from a lot of people to make it happen, but since 1981 more than 600 of the world's funniest comedians have performed free-of-charge for over a half-million people at the original outdoor comedy concert, Comedy Day. It started in the Golden Gate Park Music Concourse (affectionately known as the Band Shell), moved to the Polo Fields in 1987 to accommodate larger crowds and, for the past few years, has found a home in Sharon Meadow.”

Check the website to see if one of your favourite comedians will be there!

Lamplight Tours of Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery

tours start at McDonald Gate, McDonald Avenue and Franklin Avenue, Santa Rosa
$30
For additional information, please call 707-543-3737
Space is limited, please pre-register - see website below:

“Walk at night through Santa Rosa’s oldest cemetery to see and hear all new dramatic portrayals of some of our town’s early settlers. Lights, costumes and stage settings create a magical time as characters from the past depict a scene from their lives in the history of Santa Rosa, California and the United States. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a flashlight. (Uneven surfaces and slopes). Period costumes (1850 to 1950) encouraged. Tours last approximately one hour and leave from the McDonald Gate every 20 minutes from 7:30PM to 9:50PM. Pre-Registration Required. Book early - tours sell out!

Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery was established as the result of an accident. In November of 1854 a young father, who had arrived from Missouri only a matter of weeks before, drowned in a pond near the center of town. He was buried on land that was part of a Mexican grant given to one of the earliest settlers of Santa Rosa, Dona Maria Ignacia Lopez de Carrillo. Soon other families needed burial places, and the area became an unofficial cemetery. In 1867 the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery Association was formed and burial plots in the 17-acre site were formally offered for sale.

Sales of plots continued through 1930, through records of these transactions have been lost. During this period of 70-plus years, parts of the land were sold off, and three separate but adjacent cemeteries were established: the Stanley, Moke, and Fulkerson Cemeteries. Today the four cemeteries combined are owned by the City of Santa Rosa and known collectively as Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery. The only burials permitted today are those of descendants of families who held deeds to cemetery plots. The total number of burials is over 5200.

Neglect and vandalism took their toll on the cemetery through years of unclear ownership and sporadic maintenance. A Restoration Committee organized by dedicated volunteers in 1994 and operating under the aegis of the City of Recreation and Parks Department has made great strides in repairing damage, clearing overgrowth, and planning for permanent maintenance. In 1997, the City of Santa Rosa awarded Historical Landmark status to the Rural Cemetery.

Docent-led tours during the summer months acquaint visitors with the history of the town and the many town pioneers who are buried here. Lamplight Tours, conducted in September as fund-raising events, present dramatic vignettes from the lives of the famous and not-so-famous people buried in the Rural Cemetery.”

Walnut Festival
Friday-Sunday, September 19-21
Heather Farm Park, 500 San Carlos Drive, Walnut Creek
see website for details of schedule and tickets

“The first Festival held in 1911 was a celebration of the harvest of grapes and was called 'The Grape Festival'. During prohibition, grapes were replaced with walnuts as the cash crop of the area and the vineyards became walnut groves. In 1936, the harvest celebration became known as The Walnut Festival. The Walnut Festival Association was officially incorporated in 1938 and except for a suspended period during World War II, has been celebrated as the popular annual community event it remains today.

As Walnut Creek as grown, and suburban developments have replaced walnut groves, the Walnut Festival Association has maintained the tradition of producing fundraising events for the benefit of the community. Locations for the event have changed over the years from the center of town to Civic Park and finally, in 1976, to Heather Farm Park, where is is now held the third Thursday after the first Monday in September.”

Heart Rain in the Season of Drought
with Daniel Foor
Saturday-Sunday, September 20-21
China Camp State Park, San Rafael
$250 includes camping and meals

“As we enter the year's hottest and driest season, all of California is now in extreme drought with rainfall levels at the lowest levels in over 150 if not 500 years. For those walking an earth-honoring path, what does it mean to live in a time of drought? Without judgment, reactivity, or I-know-what-needs-to-be-happening arrogance, how can we be conscious people in harmony with the larger cycles? Although it's for each of us to grapple with these questions, we can seek to personally embody balance which, in dry times, includes deeply honoring elemental water in our lives, hearts, and relationships. Tears are holy rain, and thirst calls for feeling more deeply and for praise of life-giving water.

We'll gather for two full days (Saturday 10:00AM-Sunday 4:00PM) of community teaching and ritual to mark the Autumnal Equinox and give praise for the waters of life. We'll offer ritual to thank the spirits of place and rains-to-come and invite heart rain from those present. In addition to meeting the challenging gift of drought with open hearts (including grief ritual practices), there will be a time during the weekend for participants to make or renew vows of service and relationship with the Holy Earth.
This weekend intensive is also the monthly gathering for the closed 2014 Earth Ritual Training group. It's our one 2014 gathering that's open to new folks. If you're not already in the dedicated group, expect some basic prep and integration dialogue pre/post gathering (nothing too time intensive). Cost is $250, some flexibility as needed. This includes three healthy meals (Saturday dinner - Sunday lunch) and campsite reservations. Spaces are limited and already half full with folks from the dedicated group, so please be in touch soon to confirm your space: ancestralmedicine@gmail.com.”

Dream Yoga
a four month series with Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche
Wednesday, September 24, 7:30-9:00PM,
and three more Wednesdays, October 1, October 29, and November 5
Sacred Stream Center, 2149 Byron Street, Berkeley
$80

“It is said that the practice of dream yoga deepens awareness during all our experience: the dreams of the night; the dream-like experience of the day; and the bardo experiences after death. Indeed, the practice of dream yoga is a powerful tool of awakening, used for hundreds of years by the great masters of Tibet. Unlike the Western psychological approach to dreams, the ultimate goal of Tibetan dream yoga is the recognition of the nature of mind, or enlightenment itself. Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche will discuss these profound and ancient teachings in this series of four Wednesday evening talks at the Sacred Stream Center.

September 24: Introduction to Dream Yoga
October 1: Lucid Dreaming
October 29: Principal Practices of Dream Yoga
November 5: Overcoming Obstacles to Dream Yoga

This lecture series benefits the Tibetan Children's School and the Tibetan Association of Northern California. Free for Tibetans - Please mention TANC at the door.”

The village container will include small group breakouts, paired and triplet sharing, solo experiences and whole group debrief and storytelling sessions. Elements shared during this workshop will include:

Animal Forms: an ancient and universal set of whole-body techniques related to imitation and drawing into ourselves the essence of natural elements, animals, birds and plants, then sharing this essence through a variety of expressive arts

The Storyteller’s Mind: working with the development of all our natural senses and exercising our ability to remember or call-up all of our sensory memories - one of the most powerful tools for deep nature connection and interspecies communication

Wandering: ways to deepen the sense of timelessness and intuitive powers through a proven set of exercises based on the spirit of wandering - an ancient and powerful longing linked to connection within each of us

Sensory Connection Routines: working with the most effective exercises to increase sensory awareness linking to both Animal Forms and The Storyteller’s Mind drawn from Jon and the 8 Shields team’s vast training and cultural experience

Intuition Development: techniques, stories, and teachings helping people discern the quiet voice within and signals from the body and nature that form the basis for communication and indicate strengthening connections

Holistic Tracking: interacting with tracks, trails, sign and direct sensing of wildlife while using the full-sensory capacity of individuals, and group techniques, Animal Forms and Storyteller’s Mind to activate the mind of the tracker - modeled by the best trackers and communicators in the world, the San Bushmen

Nature Communication: an ancient form of sensing that puts us in direct connection with the elements of nature - again utilized by ancient peoples the world over as a foundation for living with and caring for the natural world, one another, and ourselves

Ritual and Ceremony: working with stories, teachings and a variety of rituals to deepen the experience of nature connection and communication with all aspects of nature

Working with this model helps awaken the ropes of connection in community and brings about a deep and powerful relationship with all of life.

“Here’s a question. Have you ever experienced the full spectrum of personalities that reside within you just waiting to be beckoned into form? Have you known the silent archetypes surrounding you who are constantly available to offer wisdom, strength, courage and love?

Wouldn’t it be a shame to come to the end of your days and have experienced a small sliver of your vastness, and let old cultural, family stories or limited self-perceptions overshadow the magnificent possibilities that await you in every moment?

The Sunflower Center, 1435 N. McDowell Boulevard, Petaluma, 707-792-5300
sliding scale $5-$10

“Buffalo Field Campaign in collaboration with HempStead Project HEART

Includes Mike Mease co-founder, presenter, buffalo stories and films.  Live music  with Goodshield and Mignon.  Booth/table with BFC merchandise, newsletters, stickers, t-shirts, DVDs, CDs, etc.  AND, HempStead Project HEART with John Trudell and organizers with presentations, music/spoken word, film, hemp merchandise, books, CDs, etc.

The Buffalo Field Campaign (BFC) is the only group working in the field, everyday, to stop the slaughter and harassment of Yellowstone’s wild buffalo. Volunteers from around the world defend buffalo on their traditional winter habitat and advocate for their protection. Our daily patrols stand with the buffalo on the ground they choose to be on, and document every move made against them.

Volunteers spend all day, from sunrise until sunset, watching and documenting actions taken against the buffalo. We run patrols from cars, skis and snowshoes to protect buffalo outside the park. Tactics range from video documentation to nonviolent civil disobedience.

BFC enjoys incredible support and participation from the local community. Residents allow us to post signs on their property designating them as Buffalo Safe Zones. We offer a fence repair service to mitigate damage caused by wildlife. Locals join us on our daily rounds, and many support our patrols with hot drinks and food.

All of our work happens because people are willing to take a break from their usual schedules and come help. Over 3000 people from all over the country and around the world have joined us in our log cabin on Hebgen Lake to help stop the buffalo slaughter. We feed and house all our volunteers in our cabin and Gardner satellite camp. Volunteers patrol for buffalo by skis, snowshoes, or cars. Everyone communicates by a network of hand-held radios, and also carries a video camera.

Our office runs outreach programs, including slide and video presentations, summer tabling in Yellowstone Park, website and e-mail updates, and national media coverage through press releases and video.”

Bay Area Ladyfest

various Bay Area locations, see website for detailed schedule
all events sliding scale $0-$20

“Ladyfests are annual, non-profit events organised mainly by womyn; they feature bands, musical and political groups, lecturers, spoken word and visual artists, workshops and discussion groups and are organised purely by volunteers. The events are focused mainly on encouraging the talent of womyn and girls, and some workshops are womyn-only, so as to make them feel more comfortable, however, main music events and films/art exhibits are open to everyone.

Ladyfest is also meant to be a place where visitors can discuss and take action on their views on topics such as sexism, equal rights, art, media and others, attend shows by both female and male performers or just have a good time in a space where they feel comfortable to be themselves.

All Ladyfest festivals have in common is their name and philosophy: they are tailored by grassroots volunteer organisers to reflect each unique community with a wide array of arts, music, film, workshops and events. The ideals of antisexism and antihomophobia are addressed throughout the fests and expressed in many ways, ranging from aggressive hardcore music to gentle talks to each other during a workshop.”

Maafa Commemoration Ceremony
Sunday, October 12, 5:30AM (before dawn)
Ocean Beach, Great Highway at Fulton Street, San Francisco
Free, all black people are invited

“The term ‘Maafa’ is Kiswahili for ‘terrible occurrence’ or ‘recurring disaster’ and has been used to describe the European slave trade or the Middle Passage. The term ‘Maafa’ also references the Black Holocaust historically and currently. In the San Francisco Bay Area, October is Maafa Awareness Month - it is a time to reflect on the legacy of slavery: victims and beneficiaries in the short and long term, and look at ways to mend, repair and heal the damage to Pan African descendants of the enslaved and their New Afrikan societies. The toll has been tremendous: psychological, economic, social, physical, emotional and spiritual.

The Maafa ritual, October 12, 2014, is an honoring of our past and a prayer for our future. All black people are invited to come and share in this time of remembrance. We ask for this one event, those who support the well-being of black people respect our desires about the commemoration ceremony and mourning ritual.

Attendees are encouraged to wear white, to dress warmly, bring their children, flowers for the ceremony, vegan or vegetarian breakfast items to share afterwards, (along with dishes to serve them on), hot beverages and cups, drums, chekeres, rattles, and positive energy. Firewood is useful for the bonfires Sunday morning. The organizers will not be responsible for security if attendees decide to spend the night.”

Bioneers Conference: Growing The Movement
Friday-Sunday, October 17-19
Marin Center, 10 Avenue of the Flags, San Rafael
See website for registration details

“Yes, 2014 marks our 25th Bioneers Conference birthday! We honor all of you who’ve shared and contributed to this amazing journey. We’re conjuring some special magic to celebrate this milestone with you at the 2014 Summit and throughout the year.

After a quarter-century, the Bioneers community of leadership has learned a thing or two about breakthrough solutions and what directions to head in. Like a magnifying glass channeling sunlight, the Growing The Movement theme is designed to help focalize this wealth of community wisdom, skillfulness and vision into beams of action – a trellis of light on which our shared work can grow.

The years between now and 2020 will be the most important in the history of human civilization. Climate change has crash-landed from the future into the present. The ecological debt we’ve incurred is dire. The hyper-concentration of wealth has captured our political systems, impoverishing humanity, the environment and democracy. The bottom line is we’re living beyond our means, and the collection agency is at the door.

This year's gathering will include a powerful cross-section of speakers including Naomi Klein, Eve Ensler, Severine von Tscharner Fleming, Terry Tempest Williams, Patricia Gualinga, and Paul Stamets.

Please join us for a weekend-long revolution from the heart of nature.”

Embraced By Love: A Retreat To Nourish And Celebrate Your Beautiful Feminine Spirit

Ralston White Retreat Center, 2 El Capitan Avenue, Mill Valley
see website for registration information

“When was the last time you gave yourself the gift of a retreat that is expressly designed to nourish and nurture your soul in a sacred, loving and feminine way?

Imagine...
Being embraced by a circle of sisters from a place of love and heartfelt acceptance
Being received into the center of a delicate rose - its petals gently caressing you into a felt sense of beauty
Being welcomed into the garden of Aphrodite's unconditional love
Joining with other soulful women in a place where you are deeply seen and invited to discover and offer your deepest gifts
Singing, laughing, dancing and celebrating with women from around the globe

We invite you to take time out of your busy life, unplug and immerse yourself in sacred beauty and soul nourishment. Come, refuel and renew yourself as we create a space for the Goddess in each of us to wake up and stretch out in the sun!

It's challenging in our everyday lives to truly walk the path of beauty and to feed ourselves regularly. So many other things compete for our attention and take priority.

Our three-day oasis in Aphrodite's Garden will give you the break you deserve - it's a special, sacred time for you to be adored, pampered, received and adorned as the beautiful woman that you are. Your senses will be re-awakened as you come alive to your fullness, and you will receive lavish, loving attention that can only happen in a sacred sister circle.

The retreat is co-led by Devaa Haley Mitchell and Elayne Doughty, who have guided hundreds of women on awakening journeys. In their care, you will be filled up, nurtured and exalted by the Goddess of Love herself. And after four days, you will leave with a deep embodiment of living your life as love and an immersive experience of the Goddess of Love within you.”

“There is no better way to end the faire season than with a full our party at the Folsom Renaissance Faire. This year's theme for the event is Shakespeare's Muse. The rising young star of London's theatre scene, Will Shakespeare, faces a scourge like no other: a paralyzing bout of writer's block, while the great Elizabethan age of entertainment unfolds around him. What Will needs is a muse - and in an extraordinary town whilst on progress with Her Most Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, he finds himself surrounded by numerous quirky characters who draw him into an amazing, dramatic adventure of action and love. Their stories make their way into his plays and into our hearts.
Revel in the amazing antics of the Elizabethan town filled with myriad of characters and vignettes resembling from Shakespeare's most beloved plays, featuring re-enactment of the 1500s with theater, music, magic, swordplay, puppetry.
Mark your calendars and come and enjoy. Costumes are wonderful and can greatly enhance your faire experience, yet they are certainly not required for attendees.”

Science and Nonduality Conference
Thursday-Sunday, October 23-26
Dolce Hayes Mansion, 200 Edenvale Avenue, San Jose

“The Entanglement of Life

Entanglement is one of the strangest parts of quantum mechanics - so strange, in fact, that Albert Einstein famously referred to it as ‘spooky action at a distance.’ An entangled system shows a property that has been measured for the whole but not for parts. For instance, we may know that the sum of the spins of a pair of two particles is zero, but neither of them is in a definite state (a condition referred to as superposition), particle until one is measured, causing the other particle to assume the opposite state. The effect is instantaneous, even if the two particles reside on opposite ends of the universe.

Curiously, when science drills down into the core of even the most solid-looking object, separateness dissolves, and all that remain are relationships extending throughout, and possibly beyond, space and time, revealing a deeper reality which evokes what sages from all ages and traditions have been describing as one substance - call it consciousness, call it energy - comprising all the universe and giving rise to all appearances.

When we begin to explore the fabric of reality either through the lens of science or through the lens of spirituality, a deeper understanding and experience of what we call reality emerges as infinite, ever present, interconnected whole.

What is the nature of the universe?
What is the nature of awareness that makes it possible for us to experience the universe?
Is there a scientifically viable way to explain consciousness?
What is the connection between consciousness and the phenomenon of entanglement?
Is our current scientific paradigm based on a subject/object split equipped to answer the bigger questions of life?
Is there evidence of quantum entanglement on a macro scale?
These and many more questions will be explored at the next SAND14!”

"Whether or not we have recently lost loved ones, we all carry a heavy load of grief and stress simply by living in these times. When we can’t find ways to drop the weight of this emotional burden, we can become hopeless, bitter or numb. Letting it go makes room for a new kind of imagination to enter. The release of these emotions requires a safe space and a caring community.

We will take a full day to help each other remember our ancestors and our personal and collective losses. In some traditions, this is the time of year when the veil between our world and the unseen world is thin; it is an opportune time to complete any unfinished business that prevents us from fully participating in life.  This will be a day of mourning and remembrance, but also of great beauty and celebration. There will be poetry, storytelling, drumming, altar-building and chanting from African, Celtic, Mexican and other traditions."

Writing Wild to Change your Life
A Weekend Workshop with Ellen Bass and Roger Housden
Friday-Sunday, November 14-16
EarthRise at IONS, 101 San Antonio Road, Petaluma
see website for registration information
“Join us in the freedom of doing what we can’t do! This will be a weekend of writing wild, of taking the risk of writing without knowing in advance what we are going to say or what we might discover. With poetry as our inspiration, we will use writing exercises to explore our deepest stories and make meaning of our most compelling experiences.

Our time together will be oriented toward paying attention. Anne Sexton advised: ‘Put your ear down close to your soul and listen hard.’ When we do this, we are inevitably changed.

Roger and Ellen will share some of their favorite poems and talk about them from the perspective of both self-exploration and poetic craft. We’ll all have the opportunity to read these poems aloud to each other and to share our responses. We'll also take time to write ourselves throughout the weekend - either poetry or prose. And there’ll be an opportunity to share what we’ve written and to hear what our writing touches in others.

Both beginning and seasoned writers will find this a fertile environment to deepen your relationship with yourself and listen more intimately to your original voice.

Ellen Bass has a new poetry book Like a Beggar, just out from Copper Canyon Press this year. Her previous books are The Human Line, which was named a Notable Book by the San Francisco Chronicle, and Mules of Love, which won the Lambda Literary Award. She co-edited (with Florence Howe) the groundbreaking No More Masks! An Anthology of Poems by Women. Her work has been published in The New Yorker, The American Poetry Review, The New Republic, The Progressive, The Kenyon Review, Ploughshares, The Sun and many other journals. Among her awards for poetry are a Pushcart Prize, the Elliston Book Award, the Pablo Neruda Prize from Nimrod/Hardman, the Larry Levis Prize from Missouri Review, and the New Letters Prize. She is core faculty of the MFA writing program at Pacific University.

Roger Housden has published twenty books, including three travel books, a novella, and the best-selling Ten Poems series, which began in 2001 with Ten Poems to Change Your Life and ended with the publication in 2012 of Ten Poems to Say Goodbye. His most recent work, Keeping the Faith Without a Religion, was published by Sounds True in March 2014. Roger also runs writing workshops in the Bay Area, with an emphasis on self enquiry. His work has been featured many times in The Oprah Magazine, in The New York Times, and in the Los Angeles Times.”
