Celebrate Lunar Beltane
and Auge, Spanish Goddess of Heat and Fertility
with Daughters of the Goddess
Thursday, April 25, 7:30PM
Oakland location given upon RSVP
$15 newcomer discount/$30 one time exchange
See website for more information and to RSVP
This ritual is for cisgendered women

“How precious are these early days of the Spring season, blessing us with bursts of rain water and so many luscious flowers?!  The morning air is filled with birdsong, the sounds of small woodpeckers learning their drumming craft, and squirrels running about finding their breakfast treats.  The night sky clouds are illuminated by the bright Moon and fragranced with evening blossoms - tickling our senses and waking up the fire in our bellies.  Let us match the energy of Mother Earth and step into our own heat at Her altar, shining under the Full Moon light in all of our glory!!

We gather at Her altar on Lunar Beltane, the climax of Spring fertility under the round belly of the Full Moon!  Celebrated approximately half-way between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice, this High Holy Day delights us with a feeling of timelessness.  With Winter certainly behind us, we get lost in the light and the sensations of the growing season with Her flowers blooming, Her fruit growing and with life pulsing everywhere - bright, abundant, and rich with promise.  As extensions of the Goddess and of the Earth, our own sensuality and sexuality are revitalized.  We become the embodiment of the Charge of the Star Goddess verse, ‘All acts of love and pleasure are my rituals.’   We take great joy and comfort in the fires that represent the bursting forth of life.  We delight in abandon!  We are womyn with beautiful breasts, bellies full of creative life force energy, and juicy, yearning, climaxing yonis.  We are the embodiment of Beltane’s fire!

In English, Auge means ‘eye’.  In Spanish, Her name means peak, height, or upturned.  She invites us to note that our yonis resemble the eye in their shape.  That we see from here - using our womyn’s intuition.  She reminds us to embrace this sacred sight that is given to us in Her name and to honor and trust it!  With our upturned eye, we can reach magnificent peaks and heights of physical pleasure; we can know true ecstasy.  Auge encourages us to shake off that which no longer serves us as sensual, sexual beings.  She says, ‘You are gorgeous!  You are delicious!  You are whole!  Know this!  Trust this!  Delight in your body made in My image!’

For this ritual please wear fiery colors or clothing worthy of Auge - the heat, the fire, the fertility!   Please bring a red or orange candle for the altar.   Please bring symbols and objects that represent the South and Fire!

As part of our ongoing magickal intention to end sex trafficking, we ask that you bring a gift card to stores such as Target in any denomination that we will donate to Freedom House, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing wholeness into the lives of survivors of sex trafficking.“

Time Sensitive
presented by Ragged Wing Ensemble
Thursday-Saturday, April 25-27, 8:00PM
playing through May 18
Sanctuary for the Arts, 496 38th Street, Oakland
$25-$40 sliding scale

“And the edge of the city crept closer...

A crack is growing.
The shape of time is changing.
Only a few can see it.
The City swallowed the world. It ate the day and the night. It ate the tides and the seasons. Now there are only seconds and nanoseconds and a constant insatiable GO. Speed is power, status is vertical, and time is literally up.

Time Sensitive is a daring new play by Artistic Director Amy Sass, which combines clockwork choreography, rhythmic fugue and ice art into a fantastical tale that urgently asks:

How do we hold a moment if we constantly crave the next big thing?

Ragged Wing Ensemble’s Mission is to catalyze a deep cultural shift where artistic action is at the center of vital social change. We aim to connect artists and audiences through the ritual of live performance, exploring universal questions that span the ancient and contemporary.  We engage in the study and practice of Ensemble, collaboratively creating new, interdisciplinary works and activating the next generation of artistically engaged citizens.

We are the do-ers. The shape-shifters, the great adapters, mythic storytellers and visionaries. We make the rules and break the rules. We roll up our sleeves. Take on big questions.  Design the world we want to live in and then build it. We walk into the mouth of fear. We cultivate a discipline of courage.”

In this poignant comic-drama, 8 year old Timmy travels into the Underworld to rescue his mother. The shrunken giant who befriends him, however, may be more trouble than he’s worth, summoning the fearsome wrath of Dragons. Meanwhile, a thousand leagues above them, a feisty environmental group and a multinational corporation go toe to toe over the ownership of a patch of genetically modified corn in a tale of deception, greed, and tangled love.”

Eurydice

Thursday-Saturday 8:00PM, Sunday 7:00PM
Gough Street Playhouse, 1620 Gough Street, San Francisco

“In Eurydice, Sarah Ruhl reimagines the classic myth of Orpheus through the eyes of its heroine.

Dying too young on her wedding day, Eurydice must journey to the underworld, where she reunites with her father and struggles to remember her past.

Using a unique blend of movement, music and theatrical ingenuity, Custom Made’s production looks to be breathtakingly inventive, funny, and beautiful. The intimate staging at Gough Street playhouse propels the inches-away audience into this Alice in Wonderland rabbit-hole of lost memories, unbelievable characters, and heartbreaking passion.

Custom Made presents a new look at this MacArthur Award-winning, and Pulitzer finalist, breakthrough play, which helps us to understand what it truly means to love another.”

The River
an original play by Richard Montoya
presented by Intersection for the Arts and Campo Santo
Thursday-Sunday, April 25-28, 8:00PM
playing through May 4
A.C.T Costume Shop, 1117 Market Street, San Francisco
$30

Richard Montoya of Culture Clash collaborates with Intersection for the Arts resident theater company Campo Santo, and its co-founder Sean San Jose, to create The River. The play is part of Montoya’s larger series, The Border Series, that explores themes of identity, California and its people, and the many types of borders they encounter and cross.

The River unites Montoya and San Jose, two of California’s most renowned and prolific artists, to tell a homeland tale that reflects their experiences and the experiences of the people who make up their families, their communities. The story’s geographic reflection ties our state together through the journeys that make us all connected.  Through their very personal lenses, Montoya and San Jose create a tale of beautifully fraught tension that reflects how socially, culturally, and economically diverse we are as the people of California.

The River carries us along its trail through the personal stories of California’s diverse citizens: illegals, hipsters, immigrants, families, outcasts, desperados.  The New River, a toxic waterway that winds by the towns along the border connecting southeast California and Mexico, forms the backdrop for intertwined stories of diverse cultures morphing, land monopolies, the Mexican Diaspora, the American Dream, a way station, a landing point, a current wasteland and a former oasis - themes that inform our view of life in all of our cities.  Through his unique gift for telling stories that combine sadness and humor, Montoya invites us to laugh as we consider our hedonism and longings rooted in our sense of loss.  The River is a wild, fun, ecstatic trip; a vision quest that slips easily and often across the border between mourning and hilarity.

About
Richard Montoya is a co-founder of the legendary performance trio known as Culture Clash which began in San Francisco’s Mission District in 1984. The collective created plays for small and local venues including La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley California and the Gilroy Garlic Festival; and for national stages such as the Arena Stage in DC, Seattle Rep, La Jolla Playhouse, Goodman Theater, Yale Rep, Mark Taper Forum, the Public Theater, and the Lincoln and Kennedy Centers. As a solo writer Montoya wrote Water and Power (LA Drama Critics’ Circle Play of the Year 2007), Palestine New Mexico, Anthems and American Night: The Ballad of Juan Jose.   American Night will be performed by the California Shakespeare Theater in a May, 2013 production featuring San Jose in the lead role. Montoya, an alumnus of the Sundance Institute’s Writers and Directors Labs, also wrote and directed Water and Power as a feature film in 2012. He was a staff writer on the first season of Southland for NBC and is writing several new works for theaters across the country.

Sean San Jose (Director, Co-Creator) is a Director, Writer, Performer and Co-Founder of Campo Santo, Intersection for the Arts resident theater company.  Campo Santo is a multicultural theatre company that gives voice to untold stories through socially relevant world premieres of plays created in long-term processes. Since 1996, he has produced and overseen more than 75 premiere productions of theatre, dance and interdisciplinary performances. San Jose’s body of work spans 45 premiere theatre productions including the first plays by Jimmy Santiago Baca, Jorge Cortinas, Junot Diaz, Dave Eggers, Denis Johnson, Greg Sarris, Luis Saguar, and Vendela Vida.  Campo Santo and San Jose have developed multiple works by Philip Gotanda, Jessica Hagedorn, Naomi Iizuka, Octavio Solis, John Steppling, Erin Cressida Wilson, and others. He was the Creator and Project Director of Alma Delfina Group - Teatro Contra el SIDA (1994-2002) and Pieces of the Quilt - a collection of more than 50 short plays including original works by Rhodessa Jones, Danny Hoch, Edward Albee, Lanford Wilson, Maria Irene Fornes, David Henry Hwang, Craig Lucas, Tony Kushner, Herbert Siguenza, Migdalia Cruz and many more confronting AIDS.”

The Finnish Brotherhood Hall, 1970 Chestnut Street, berkeley
$7

“Vintage Invasion - where the old dances invade a new generation
Our crowd is growing and thriving... a really positive atmosphere!

Have you ever waltzed to Metallica or danced a polka to Lady Gaga? Yes?  Then you know what a great time it is, and we will see you there!  No?  Well it's never too late to start.  Since we have hundreds of years of waltz music to choose from, the variety makes a wonderful, festive evening.  This is a casual, neighborhood party: a chance to meet people, bounce around, and generally make merry.  We'll have a potluck; you are welcome to bring snacks if you like.  Your hosts always bring the punch and water.  No alcohol, please, as we sometimes have dancers under 21 attending.

All are welcome for the lesson, so we can get you moving and ready to sail across the floor.  If you're new to dancing we promise to be patient with you, and if you have waltzed before we will improve your technique.  After class, during the dance party, we will still be available to help you with what we taught you, and introduce you to some of our regulars.  They are well skilled, but don't be shy about asking them to dance with you too.  They'll probably be happy for the chance to show off. :)

8:00-9:00 = Lesson in Vintage Waltz - no partner or experience needed
9:00-Midnight = Dance to Persephone and guest DJs playing lots of waltzes, and a little bit of many other partner dances.”

Devotional to Brighid
presented by Chieftain Branwen’s Temple of the Open Sky
Saturday, April 27, 1:00PM
gathering outside the Berkeley Art Center, 1275 Walnut Street, Berkeley
Donations gratefully accepted
Chieftain Branwen’s blog: http://theprimalheart.wordpress.com

“Come and be welcomed at The Temple of the Open Sky
Devotional to Brighid

The Temple of the Open Sky is founded on the belief that freedom of religion is a right that needs to be practiced when and where it can be. Here in the SF Bay Srea we are privileged with a freedom from fear of retaliation for outward expression of differing religious beliefs that is not found elsewhere in the USA, let alone in the World. It is this truth that brought forth that need to create a space where the Gods’ names were spoken outside of closed doors, without hiding, under the open sky.

In that vein, the Temple of the Open Sky seeks to create a platform for Pagan worship and devotion that is supportive of the many and varying methods of finding the divine. To create a safe container, free from shame, to be out in the world with our spirituality.

Come and join us on Saturday for a ritual to honor the great Goddess of many talents, Brighid. The Exalted Irish Goddess is most famously known for her tri-fold duties as a patron of healing, the forge, and inspiration. Singing the praises she of the melodious mouth'd, being in her presence, long-time devotees and newcomers alike can seek her blessed favor.

After the ritual we will be enacting the sacred rites of old and feasting! Picnic style! Stay for the just the ritual or enjoy the great outdoors in good company.

What to look for: We will be gathering outside the Berkeley Art Center to avoid confusion, as NROOGD’s lovely Beltane ritual will be happening at the Ancient Oak. To find ua, look for Brighid's Cross.

What to Bring: All that you need for picnicking for yourself and your party, (a blanket, food, utensils, sunscreen, hat). Any items you would like charged on the Altar. Offerings of flowers white or yellow for Brighid if you feel called.“

Jeffrey Werbock's Mugham Program: Azerbaijani Art Music Live

Silk Road House, 1944 University Avenue, Berkeley, 510-981-0700
for more information, please e-mail silkroadhouse@yahoo.com or call 510-981-0700

“Jeffrey Werbock will present a program of instrumental solo improvisations based on traditional Azerbaijani mugham, played on oud - fretless wood face short neck lute; tar - fretted skin face long neck lute; and kamancha - skin face spike fiddle.

Azerbaijani mugham is monophonic modal music, highly microtonal, meter free, densely ornamented, composed of complex melodic lines that are somewhat improvised according to certain traditional rules, and convey a mix of sorrow and joy, exaltation and lament, and an overall sense of both antiquity and otherworldiness.

Mr. Werbock is Chairman of the Mugham Society of America. The mission of Mugham Society of America is to promote awareness of Azerbaijan and its traditional art culture in the English speaking West. Mr. Werbock has been giving presentations for well over three decades and has performed often at Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, Asia Society, World Music Institute, and presents lecture demonstrations at colleges and universities all over the English speaking world. He has been awarded an honorary degree by the National Music Conservatory of Azerbaijan, in Baku, and was recently sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan to perform a solo concert.

Silk Road House events are sponsored by the Silkroad Foundation.”

Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind (PG; 116 mins.)
Considered to be the first film from the famous Studio Ghibli! A Japanese animated post-apocalyptic fantasy adventure film not to be missed!  If you've seen it before - time to see it again!  Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, etc.) and based on his 1982 manga of the same name. Warrior/pacifist Princess Nausicaa desperately struggles to prevent two warring nations from destroying themselves and their dying planet. While created right before Studio Ghibli was founded, it is considered to be the beginning of the studio. Among its numerous awards, it won the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize in 1984.  Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is frequently ranked among the best animated films in Japan and is seen as a seminal influence on the development of anime.  Miyazaki's manga version of Nausicaa was written over a period of 12 years, with breaks taken to work on Studio Ghibli films. The Nausicaa manga is published in English by VIZ Media of San Francisco.

Don’t Drive - SERIOUSLY. Parking sucks in this area. Take BART or MUNI downtown, as we are directly adjacent to the Montgomery Street BART/MUNI station! Street parking ($3.50+ per hour/coins or meter card, most no charge cards) is metered 7 days a week til 6PM. If you can, drive to your local BART station, and BART in.  Or, if in the City, and you have to drive, we suggest either parking at the Folsom St. Garage at 3rd and Folsom (cheapest), across from Moscone Center, or find a parking garage.”

Bindi Society: Eclectic World Music Trio
Sacred and Profane World Music
Saturday, April 27, 8:00PM
Garden Gate Creativity Center, 2911 Claremont Avenue, Berkeley

“Bindi Society is comprised of three talented musicians based in the San Francisco Bay Area. At the core of the music is the beauty of the harp, and the unique, guitar-like writings of harpist Barbara Imhoff. Irish vocalist Cait McWhir elevates the arrangements with her haunting interpretations of Indian chants, and English songs with a Celtic touch. Peter Whitehead, talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, integrates dumbek, frame drum, rebab and fujara into the mix. This beautiful tapestry of sounds is infused with depth, spiritual mystery and beauty. The sound is reminiscent of Imhoff’s Beasts of Paradise and Ring, and McWhir’s Haunted by Waters. “

Introduction to the Shamanic Journey
with Anne Hatfield and Stuart Dole
Saturday-Sunday, April 27-28
exact location in Santa Rosa given upon registration
$125 for both full days, Saturday morning session is free
for more information, please call 707-570-0111 or e-mail info@annehatfield.com.

“What is shamanism?
Shamanism is the world’s oldest system of spiritual healing and divination, practiced by indigenous peoples all over the world. The shaman makes ecstatic flights into the world of the spirits to obtain information and bring back healing.  Shamanism is an effective way to expand your awareness and access spiritual guidance directly for yourself.

What will I learn?
What shamanism is and how it works, including an overview of the spirit worlds
How you can travel safely to the worlds of the spirits, using gentle drumming
Who your power animals and spirit teachers are - and how to work with them
How to expand your consciousness and obtain direct spiritual guidance
How to increase power, creativity, and humor in your life - and how to help your friends do the same

We will use the traditional sounds of repetitive drumming to facilitate the journeys. There will be ample time for background discussion, practical instruction, journey exercises, and questions.

Note that this workshop (or equivalent experience) is required for many of the other workshops that we teach.

About the Workshop
The Journey Initiation Class is taught in four sessions - the mornings and afternoons of a weekend.  During the first session, we cover the basics of what shamanism is, and how to journey - including a practice journey to the lower world to actually meet your power animal. This part is FREE! It will give you a taste of what shamanism is, and help you decide whether you want to take the rest of the workshop or not. (Almost everyone takes all four sessions.)”

ConjureCon
Saturday-Monday, April 27-29
The Serpent's Kiss, 2015 N Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz
see website for detailed schedule and registration information

“The second annual ConjureCon will be held on April 27-29th, 2013.

Registration is now OPEN!

This year's lineup promises to be even more exciting than last year, with a focus on hands-on tools and experiences.

Check out this year's classes:

Love Letters and Petition Papers with Auntie Sindy Todo
Writing petitions, letters, prayers and intentions in Conjure is one of the oldest and most important tools a good conjurer can utilize. These practices are ways we get our desires out of us and into the creative body of Spirit (God, Goddess, etc.).

Powering Up in Prayer with Orion Foxwood
The concept of ‘prayer’ means many things to many people across many traditions, religions and practices. But, regardless of the language we use, prayer is the means by which we humans can access and direct the flow of creative-life-force.

Undercover Work : Sneaky Tricks with Auntie Sindy Todo
How can you get some work done without it being obvious? Where do you hide work in or around the home or office? How do you keep others from messing with your work. The answer to these questions is simple...be sneaky. How do you get your hands on personal items covertly?

Drawing and Holding Your Money in your Pocket with Momma Starr Casas
All of us want to have a prosperous life that both provides for our needs and enhances the joy of our life. This aspect of our life requires a constant and unhindered flow of cash and other forms or prosperity. Honestly, do you never seem to have enough cash?

Unleashing Your Psychic Powers with Susan Diamond
Too often, what we call ‘psychic’ is actually natural inner knowing. We over-mystify this ancient and accessible part of how we work. It is a source of wisdom that is accessible to anyone who seeks it and all we need to do is ‘unleash its power’ into our goals and our lives.

River Magic with Orion Foxwood
Conjure and root-work, at its foundations, is about ‘tapping the root’ or core power, set forth into and through the worlds by the creator (in its many forms). One of the old methods for doing this is to work with the banks, on-coming and out-going tides, banks and bottom of rivers and streams. This kind of work is African, European and Native American at its roots and offers a power to be accessed and which is always accessible.

Calling on Your Holy Household: Engaging the Ancestors with Momma Starr Casas
Each one of us has an ‘invisible team’ of partnering, informing and empowering spirits that walk with us and join us in our work leveraging that which is unseen to that which is seen. Stop, look and listen to the spirits this spirit-family that walk with you. The most intimate of these is your blood and spiritual ancestors...those who have walked and paved the way before you arrived in this world.

Conjure Cuisine: Edible Spells with Susan Diamond
What we take inside of us becomes us! This concept and truth is the basis for conjure cuisine. In this work, We become the living mojo-bag for our work. As conjure-workers, we can create foods that have magic based on the recipe and the timing of its creation that produces visible effects on love, power, peace, healing and a host of other outcomes.”

Who/what must we become? Visioning allows us to catch the highest possibilities.

Please join us!”

The Captive Muse
with Susan Kolodny
Sunday, April 28, 1:00-4:00PM
The Dream Institute of Northern California, 1672 University Avenue, Berkeley, 510-845-1767
$45, please register in advance at the website below

“Those who do creative work, or want to do it, often come up against internal obstacles. Some of these are the inevitable fears and anxieties that accompany any creative endeavor. In this workshop, participants will meet and name the inner voices that berate, disparage, and distract us from attempts to sculpt, paint, or write. We will consider what constitutes ‘helpers’ and what contributes to a sense of safety so a project can proceed. Although the focus will be on creativity in the arts and in writing, the workshop will also have a bearing on creative endeavors of any type. Psychotherapists and others who work with creative people will gain a deeper understanding of the anxieties such individuals encounter and ways these can be tamed or at least made tolerable. Part didactic, part experiential.

Susan Kolodny started her professional life as a junior college English instructor and aspiring writer. She became a psychologist after recognizing that the difficulties her students and she had with writing often had emotional sources. She is now a psychoanalyst practicing in Oakland where she works with artists, writers, and others. Dr. Kolodny is the author of The Captive Muse: On Creativity and Its Inhibition (PsychoSocial Press, 2000) and a poet whose work appears in many literary journals and anthologies. Her first collection, After the Firestorm, was published in 2011 by Mayapple Press. Dr. Kolodny is Member and Faculty at SFCP and a Personal Analyst at PINC. She has lectured widely, taught courses, and conducted workshops on various aspects of creativity and its inhibition.”

“Developed by Jyoti and Russell Park, PhD, Maitri Breathwork is a transformative experience and healing modality that combines the power of breath, cross-cultural music, healing herbs, and hands-on bodywork in a sacred, supportive setting.

Individuals use a simple breathing technique to enter a non-ordinary state, allowing access to healing states of consciousness to explore inner realms and support healing for mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of being. Release, re-patterning, and receiving allow one to navigate daily life with more fluidity, ease, and personal power.

Following the Breathwork process, Breathers may create a mandala to capture images, sensations, archetypal symbols, and meanings from the experience.
Our day will consist of an opening circle; we will then work with a partner and have the first breathing session, then a light lunch, followed by another breathing session, dinner, and a closing circle. Each person experiences Breathwork as both a Breather and a Sitter.

We invite you to join us in discovering a world within, accessible by breath, to lead the way to freedom of expression, personal empowerment, and health. This Breathwork is facilitated by Trish Noble and Courtney Courtney, certified Maitri Breathworkers, and supported by trained Maitri Breathwork assistants.

We’ll examine which types of relationships likely to be most fulfilling to an individual, based on factors present in the birthchart. We’ll also learn how to look at two birthcharts together, analyzing the planetary interaspects between them using synastry. This allows us to better understand the unique blessings and challenges specific to the relationship.

Prerequisite: Fundamentals 1, 2, and 3, or the basic ability to understand a birthchart and planetary transits. Contact the store to see if this class is right for you.”
