Molly Blue Dawn's Holiday Gift Guide 2016

Featuring ideas for gifts for any of the many gift-giving occasions you and/or your friends and/or family members might be celebrating at about this time of year, or, indeed, other times of year!

Featuring artists, artisans, practitioners, craftspeople, and merchants who are local or magical or sustainable or just nifty!

Also featuring ideas for gifts that aren’t things!

Solstice, Yule, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Mithras’ Birthday, your loved ones’ birthdays that happen to fall in late November/December/early January... any one of these events might be an occasion for you to give someone a gift, even if you do not, personally, celebrate that event.  With that in mind, and prompted by an idea from the Lady Yeshe Rabbit, source of so many good ideas which have improved my life (and quite possibly yours), I have created this Holiday Gift Guide.  Feel free to use these gift ideas at other times of year, as well.  ‘Tis always the season to spread happiness while supporting local and/or magical and/or sustainable businesses!

I have divided the guide into five sections.  Section One is a list of artists, artisans, practitioners, and craftspeople.  Section Two is a list of nifty stores in the Bay Area.  Section Three is a list of Craft Fair(e)s happening in the Bay Area this winter.  Section Four is a list of musicians.  Section Five is a list of gifts that aren’t things.

If I’ve left out one of your favourite members of any of these categories, please let me know so that I can include them in next year’s edition!
_____________________________________

Section One:  Artists, Artisans, Practitioners, and Craftspeople

Madame Hummingbird Rainbow - Hummingbird Honey
Herbals, Clothing and Jewelry Handmade by Hummingbird!

Jo Adell - Filaments Project
Knotworking is Jewelry, Pearlstringing, Fine Embroidery and the Filaments Project: Recycled Guitar String Art for Charity. Made by Autistic and Currently Homeless artist Jo Adell.

Sylvia Victor Linsteadt - Wild Talewort
Sylvia Victor Linsteadt is a writer, artist, and certified animal tracker. Her work - both fiction and non-fiction - explores the tenets of deep ecology and wild myth, and is devoted to radically transforming and broadening our human stories to include the voices, perspectives and dreams of the more-than-human world.

Rima Staines - The Hermitage
Rima Staines is an artist using paint, wood, word, music, animation, clock-making, puppetry and story to attempt to build a gate through the hedge that grows along the boundary between this world and that. Her gate-building has been a lifelong pursuit, and she hopes to have perhaps propped aside even one spiked loop of bramble (leaving a chink just big enough for a mud-kneeling, trusting eye to glimpse the beauty there beyond), before she goes through herself.

Tim Hirons - Coyopa
My name’s Tom Hirons. I’m a storyteller, acupuncturist, wilderness rites of passage guide, poet and craftsman on the edge of Dartmoor. I’ve made my home here between field and moor with Rima Staines, an extraordinary artist whose work you should almost certainly be better acquainted with. Some work here is long, some is short; some of it’s prose and some’s poetry. Some’s sweet on the ear and some of it’s a strange beast that came from Nowhere Known, awkward and half-made. Some pieces are a bit in-between all of it and that’s perhaps my favourite kind.

Christina Smith - Ferae Naturae Cold Porcelain Botanical Sculptures
When young I was what some might call 'a magical child', capable of 'magical thinking'. This meant that, among other things, I seemed to be able to form connections and develop friendships with flowers, insects, plants, fungi, and the elements. Thankfully this ability remained with me. When I later studied Natural History Illustration, I was as a result able to explore my connection with the natural world in different, some might say unusual ways, than I otherwise probably would have done, were it not for my early 'magical' perceptions.

Builders of the New Dawn
We offer you an eclectic, highly curated selection of Vintage Books & Ephemera
Specializing in Countercultural & Subcultural movements of the 20th Century, we also include a healthy dose of Classic & Avant Garde literature as well as the quirky & offbeat.

Blossom Merz, the Weaving Monk
Weaving is my meditation and spiritual communion. Guiding thousands of threads into place, winding bobbins on the porch where I can hear the birds, finding myself still in awe of a length of finished cloth - these are all ways that I feel connected to the the divine and to the world around me. I hope that my handmade garments help to remind people of their connections to others.

Glowees
Glow in the dark jewelry, hoodies, t-shirts, tanks, monsters, earrings, pendants, brooches, pins and more! Things that bring light into the darkness. Pushing the limits of weird. Welcome to my bizarre little store!

Just Rewards: Amber and Jet
Operated by Drew Ward, a Heathen priest of Frey and member of Hammer of Thor Kindred, Just Rewards will offers genuine Baltic amber jewelry and small gift items including birch bark boxes and other treasures at surprisingly comfortable prices.

Stars in Jars
Stars in Jars Essences are vibrational remedies co-created with Nature from a combination of flower, gem, environmental and cosmic essences. Our one of a kind formulas are created in sacred space with channeled blessings.

By Nieves: Handmade Natural Body Care
By Nieves is a natural handmade body care line produced with organic ingredients and served with a twist. Nieves delights in formulating unique and wonderful body care, developing products that she wants to use - and has found that other people are looking for the same! Voted Best Local Skincare Line by SF Weekly.

Stephanie Pui-Mun Law: Shadowscapes
Stephanie Law's work is an exploration of mythology mixed with her personal symbolism. Her art journeys through surreal otherworlds, populated by dreamlike figures, masked creatures, and winged shadows. The fantastical permeates through the visions, and you get a sense that this is a world that underlies our own, when viewed with a desire for beauty, and a shifted perception for the potential within the kernel of all.

Rhatura
Rhatura is a mystic, sage, healer, activist, youth worker, and creative genius with a touch of East Coast and soulful swagger. His art is influenced from sacred geometry, metaphysics, cartoons, nature, indigenous cultures, social justice, and graffiti. He often considers himself as the vehicle in which the Universe channels creative energies that manifest in various designs and art forms. He hails from Boston, MA but has found solace in the chill vibes of the East Bay in California.

Lulu Deux Millinery
I absolutely love love love historical fashion, even the downright silly, and have been a student of all things historical and millinery for over 20 years. I've been fascinated by all of the possibilities of the fascinator after studying in London with Rose Cory, former milliner to the Queen Mum. So much punch for such a little package!

Velvet Harpy Productions
If you ever wanted something well made, custom fit, beautiful and highly unique, you're in the right place. Specializing in historically accurate outfits and corsets, made to measure. Velvet Harpy Productions can make you your perfect outfit.

Crow’s Daughter Earthly Goods

Renae Taylor:  Prints, Wings, Lamps and Art Dolls
My work is about memory, imagination, and retaining the sense of wonder in the world that I felt as a child.  It’s about holding on to the idea that something wondrous and strange is just around the corner.  Why shouldn’t little girls have tea with moths, trees dance under the stars, and beautiful women wear ugly fish as hats?  I want my work to make people smile, laugh out loud, just let go and remember.

Kimberly Moore - MotherHouse Goddess Shop
Kimberly F. Moore is the Founder of the MotherHouse of the Goddess and has been a Priestess of the Goddess for more than 20 years. She is an Aborisha in the Lukumi tradition and a Daughter of Oshun.

Blue Moon Designs: Fancy Utility Accessories and Light Up Clothing
Katherine the Great began designing costumes in 1995 while still in high school, inspired by the lack of interesting clothing and costuming in her sizable size.  She has brought that same commitment to beautiful clothes that fit well to her unique accessory business Blue Moon Designs.

Faerywhere
Leather masks with a unique fantasy flair

Frogworks

My laser-cut and and etched designs are inspired by industrial, natural, and historical subjects. I welcome commissions as well as making standard items in colors of your choice. My portfolio of projects ranges from jewel-toned acrylic earrings to two-foot-wide constructions of faux-metal gears.

Kathleen Dustin
Widely recognized as one of the world's leading polymer clay artists, Kathleen Dustin has been a pioneer, an educator, and source of inspiration for those interested in this emerging medium. Her exquisite evening bags have been celebrated for their emotional images of women, translucent depth of surface, and vibrant colors. Her most recent purses and art jewelry pay attention to the natural forms she finds in the woods of New Hampshire.

Preponderance of the Small: Photography by Kathy Cronin
We live in a world full of imagery. Every day we are presented with an almost overwhelming amount of visual information and we must all pick and chose what to pay attention to. People will travel great distances to see scenic beauty but they often miss the beauty that lies beneath their feet or that exists in a common view that they see day after day. The cracks in a sidewalk, the rust on an old tin can, the peeling of paint, these things can also be small scenes of great scenic beauty. Nature is constantly reclaiming and remaking the man made and as the greatest of all artists it has it way with all things both great and small. My art is about paying homage to this. I like to focus on the views that are easily overlooked and show how the universal is in the moment. I call my work the Preponderance of the small after the 62nd hexagram of the I Ching.

Nagle Forge and Foundry
Nagle Forge and Foundry is a small family operated American casting company that specializes in designing and crafting historically inspired and limited edition jewelry and clothing fasteners from the finest lead free pewter, bronze, sterling silver or 14k gold.

Marty Magic Jewelry
The jewelry and sculpture I design is created by the lost wax casting process. I personally sculpt each original in wax at my Santa Cruz studio. My designs are then cast into gold, sterling silver or bronze. Fantasy, fairy tales and the magic of nature significantly influence my work.

Alexandra Von Burg
All Dolls are soft sculptures, made with cotton bodies and polyester stuffing. Some have moveable joints, and some are fixed. They are handmade by Alexandra from original patterns designed by Alexandra. They have needle sculpted and hand painted faces, each one made individually for a unique and one of a kind personality.

Luna Fina
Benvenuti, welcome, to the world of Luna Fina. A sensitive place where Annabella lives and works. It is Luna Fina's sphere, hallowed ground, where hearts open and words and songs unfold.

Caren D. Catterall: Artist, Printmaker
My creativity feels like a divine gift to me, and I honor the gift by making my art about Spirit. I am inspired by the places of ancient ritual and celebration, such as the megalithic, solar aligned temples of Malta, the standing stone circles of Stonehenge, and images of the Divine Feminine in all her guises. I want to express the numinous quality of life, where the elements of nature and the stones and the places of power come alive and speak to us on a deeper level.

Suzanne deVeuve: Art of the Mystical Divine
My work is about introspection and bringing inner treasures outside.  It’s tending to the moment and being with the flow of grace.

D'BI.YOUNG ANITAFRIKA: dubpoet mono-dramatist and educator
the art(is)t shaman: sacred gatherings at the crossroads of life, art, ritual, healing and magic

Cerridwen offers a wide selection of classes, including a year long Apprenticeship program. She also works as a professional psychic, offering readings and trance journeys (hypnotherapy in a shamanic context.)

Patricia A. Leslie: Author
Austenian comedy of manners meets whimsical folklore-inspired historical romance! Her storytelling has a lighthearted tone, juxtaposed against some serious philosophical issues. Fans of Jane Austen will enjoy Ms. Leslie's deft exploration of the quirks and contradictions, absurdities, strengths, and vulnerabilities of human (and not-exactly-human) nature, and the variety of missteps, joys, and misfortunes that always attend love and romance. In fact, the course of true love is extremely rocky for the destiny-starred Randolph family, who cross the Veil from the Mortal World into other realms, as readily as most people cross the street.

Here you will find bits of magic and faerie glamour.

Feral Priestess
I am inspired by all that is wild & feral:
Owls rising silently into the cold night sky at twilight, damp misty woods dripping into lush ferns & carpets of moss, fields of golden grass moving like waves in the ocean, the quickening of my pulse as the moon rises, your wild & feral soul.
I weave the facets of myself into my work: artist, biologist, Priestess, wanderer.  I hope to share with you a  touch of the wild & magic.  May you hear the call of the forest & step off the path into the wild unknown…

North By Northwest Designs
We started our business in 2013 by combining our talent and passion for wearable art.  We hand make a variety of jewelry items from lost wax cast sterling silver pendants, to hemp and bead knotted bracelets, to mixed metal earrings and more.  We also hand make knitted items that range from toys, to hats, to scarves and gloves.  I hope you enjoy shopping with us, and let us know if you have any questions or comments.

While Odin Sleeps
My name is Lauren, and I currently live in San Francisco. I am exceptionally indecisive, credulous, and regularly distracted. I've either become fond of said qualities or have simply gotten used to them. I prefer fond because that would imply that I chose them. "The same qualities as the wind!" I'd say. Speaking of the wind, I've been courting mother nature for quite some time and to my mother's dismay, we're getting married. There is something to be said about the colors Mother Nature chose and the shapes she has created. She's quite the artist and her work is what inspires mine. I dream of raising bees and goats amongst the trees.

Section Four:  Musicians

Among my favourite artists are the independent musicians who sell their wares at their concerts, on their websites, and out of the back of their vans.  Here are some you may find interesting - some are local to the Bay Area, some are local to somewhere else, some are local to wherever the friend’s couch is that they are crashing on tonight.  Some are Pagan; all are making magic!  Please support them!

Section Five:  Gifts that Aren’t Things

What do you get for the Witch who has everything?
Or, more realistically, the Witch who has waaay too many things?
My favourite gifts are ones that don’t take up any space in my house!

Experiences - Take them to a play, a concert, or other nifty event!

Some local theatre companies which I love:

Knights of Revery

Ragged Wing

Butterfield 8

Impact Theatre

Unscripted Theatre

Some intimate local venues for live music:

Wisteria Ways

Rose Street Music

Berkeley House Concerts

Avonova

SYLA Presents

Take them to dinner!  Throw them a party!  Pay for them to take a class!  Pay for a Divination session!  Pay for a Massage or Healing session!

Give the gift of an unforgettable experience that will create lasting happiness and never need to be dusted!

Donations - Make a contribution in their name to a charity close to their heart!

Standing Rock - still protecting the Water!

Surprise Bonus Extra Section:  Gifts That You Can Make

Maybe you love the idea of making a gift yourself, but you don’t know what to make or how to make it.  If you have access to a colour printer and good quality paper, you can make the magical models available on this website!

Isn’t that delightful?  Delight is one of the best gifts of all!
