Molly Blue Dawn's Holiday Gift Guide 2015

Featuring ideas for gifts for any of the many gift-giving occasions you and/or your friends and/or family members might be celebrating at about this time of year, or, indeed, other times of year!

Featuring artists, artisans, practitioners, craftspeople, and merchants who are local or magical or sustainable or just nifty!

Also featuring ideas for gifts that aren’t things!

Solstice, Yule, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Mithras’ Birthday, your loved ones’ birthdays that happen to fall in late November/December/early January... any one of these events might be an occasion for you to give someone a gift, even if you do not, personally, celebrate that event.  With that in mind, and prompted by an idea from the Lady Yeshe Rabbit, source of so many good ideas which have improved my life (and quite possibly yours), I have created this Holiday Gift Guide.  Feel free to use these gift ideas at other times of year, as well.  ‘Tis always the season to spread happiness while supporting local and/or magical and/or sustainable businesses!

I have divided the guide into five sections.  Section One is a list of artists, artisans, practitioners, and craftspeople.  Section Two is a list of nifty stores in the Bay Area.  Section Three is a list of Craft Fair(e)s happening in the Bay Area this winter.  Section Four is a list of musicians.  Section Five is a list of gifts that aren’t things.

If I’ve left out one of your favourite members of any of these categories, please let me know so that I can include them in next year’s edition!

Stephanie Pui-Mun Law: Shadowscapes
Stephanie Law's work is an exploration of mythology mixed with her personal symbolism. Her art journeys through surreal otherworlds, populated by dreamlike figures, masked creatures, and winged shadows. Renae Taylor:  Prints, Wings, Lamps and Art Dolls
My work is about memory, imagination, and retaining the sense of wonder in the world that I felt as a child.  It’s about holding on to the idea that something wondrous and strange is just around the corner.  Why shouldn’t little girls have tea with moths, trees dance under the stars, and beautiful women wear ugly fish as hats?  I want my work to make people smile, laugh out loud, just let go and remember.

Preponderance of the Small: Photography by Kathy Cronin
We live in a world full of imagery. Every day we are presented with an almost overwhelming amount of visual information and we must all pick and chose what to pay attention to. People will travel great distances to see scenic beauty but they often miss the beauty that lies beneath their feet or that exists in a common view that they see day after day. The cracks in a sidewalk, the rust on an old tin can, the peeling of paint, these things can also be small scenes of great scenic beauty. Nature is constantly reclaiming and remaking the man made and as the greatest of all artists it has it way with all things both great and small. My art is about paying homage to this. I like to focus on the views that are easily overlooked and show how the universal is in the moment. I call my work the Preponderance of the small after the 62nd hexagram of the I Ching.

Benvenuti, welcome, to the world of Luna Fina. A sensitive place where Annabella lives and works. It is Luna Fina's sphere, hallowed ground, where hearts open and words and songs unfold.

Caren D. Catterall: Artist, Printmaker
My creativity feels like a divine gift to me, and I honor the gift by making my art about Spirit. I am inspired by the places of ancient ritual and celebration, such as the megalithic, solar aligned temples of Malta, the standing stone circles of Stonehenge, and images of the Divine Feminine in all her guises. I want to express the numinous quality of life, where the elements of nature and the stones and the places of power come alive and speak to us on a deeper level.

Suzanne deVeuve: Art of the Mystical Divine
My work is about introspection and bringing inner treasures outside.  It’s tending to the moment and being with the flow of grace.

Patricia A. Leslie: Author
Austenian comedy of manners meets whimsical folklore-inspired historical romance! Her storytelling has a lighthearted tone, juxtaposed against some serious philosophical issues. Fans of Jane Austen will enjoy Ms. Leslie's deft exploration of the quirks and contradictions, absurdities, strengths, and vulnerabilities of human (and not-exactly-human) nature, and the variety of missteps, joys, and misfortunes that always attend love and romance. In fact, the course of true love is extremely rocky for the destiny-starred Randolph family, who cross the Veil from the Mortal World into other realms, as readily as most people cross the street.

My unique glass and sterling silver jewelry is made using focused sunshine to melt glass into simple and elegant droplets. Sundrop Jewelry is shaped solely by gravity, making my signature droplets a glittering symbol of the combined power of the Earth and Sun.

We invite you to imagine...
There were ages when things were crafted with timeless elegance… when people honored masterful artisan workmanship… when dedicated craftsmen would hone their abilities for years, and find ways to integrate their skills with emerging social needs and innovative new technologies. These were times that did not embrace the culture of fast, cheap, disposable. These were cultures that had a high regard for those who spent their days not in passive entertainment, but in the relentless pursuit of excellence. What if we could bring a little bit of that back?

Gravel & Gold
Gravel & Gold is an independent, woman-owned design collective in San Francisco. Since 2008, we have supported one another and a broader community of artists to create joyful, useful items. We share business responsibilities, a studio, and meals, we run workshops, and we take care to express our common values through the work we create.

Section Four:  Musicians

Among my favourite artists are the independent musicians who sell CDs at their concerts, on their websites, and out of the back of their vans.  Here are some you may find interesting - some are local to the Bay Area, some are local to somewhere else, some are local to wherever the friend’s couch is that they are crashing on tonight.  Some are Pagan; all are making magic!  Please support them!

Section Five:  Gifts that Aren’t Things

What do you get for the Witch who has everything?
Or, more realistically, the Witch who has waaay too many things?
My favourite gifts are ones that don’t take up any space in my house!

Experiences - Take them to a play, a concert, or other nifty event!

Some local theatre companies which I love:

Ragged Wing

Butterfield 8

Impact Theatre

Unscripted Theatre

Some intimate local venues for live music:

Wisteria Ways

Rose Street Music

Berkeley House Concerts

Avonova

SYLA Presents

Julie’s Coffee and Tea Garden

Take them to dinner!  Throw them a party!  Pay for them to take a class!  Pay for a Divination session!  Pay for a Massage or Healing session!

Give the gift of an unforgettable experience that will create lasting happiness and never need to be dusted!

Donations - Make a contribution in their name to a charity close to their heart!

Wildlife Rescue:

Pet Rescue:

Ecological/Environmental:

Food Banks:

Social Change:

Surprise Bonus Extra Section:  Gifts That You Can Make

Maybe you love the idea of making a gift yourself, but you don’t know what to make or how to make it.  If you have access to a colour printer and good quality paper, you can make the magical models available on this website!

Isn’t that delightful?  Delight is one of the best gifts of all!
