Atomic Intuition
presented by Ragged Wing Ensemble
Friday-Sunday, March 9-11, Friday and Saturday 8:00PM, Sunday 5:00PM
Envision Academy, 1515 Webster Street , Oakland
$15-$30
http://raggedwing.org/show/show_detail/21
https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/227072

“The Fortune Project Chapter 2: Atomic Intuition
Challenging the dichotomy of the material and psychic worlds, we ask; ‘Is the fabric of Mystery woven with electrons and protons?’

Chapter Two of the Fortune Project is a highly interactive multidisciplinary performance experience that offers ways of peering into this question with activities, reflections and a central performance.

The audience is invited to gamble with their memories, divine through film, and tell a tarot reader what is in store for them.

Designed to delight and disorient, Atomic Intuition, conceived by Cecilia Palmtag and embodied by the ensemble, explores the forest of uncertainty in search of grounding perspectives and constant truths.

Ragged Wing Ensemble opens 2012 with a series of interactive performance events exploring the theme of Fortune.

We investigate how the universe speaks to us through our daily interactions: road signs, dreams, messages and images that find us when we most need them or warn us from going down the wrong path.

How can we take responsibility for our own destiny, while also accepting the cards we are dealt?

Each of the four chapters explores an aspect of this question from a different perspective. This 6 month project will culminate in an evening of pieces in late May directed by various ensemble members.

Upcoming performances:
Chapter 3: Dangerous Curves Ahead, April 23-May 13
Chapter 4: The Fortune Project: The Complete Works, May 23-27

Ragged Wing Ensemble is a collective of artists who create innovative work for the theater, drawing our theatrical vocabulary from physical theater, dance, clowning, mask work and puppetry. We seek to redefine classic stories, folktales and myths by creating original interpretations and placing them in new contexts. Our process is collaborative - from the  management of the company to the creation of our pieces, from our educational programs to our commitment to low ticket prices and audience involvement.”

part of the Re-Skilling Workshop series
Saturday, March 10, 10:00AM-4:00PM, Part Two on April 1, Part Three on May 6
Part One at Windrush Farm, 2263 Chileno Valley Road, Petaluma
Parts Two and Three at  Commonweal Garden at the Regenerative Design Institute, Bolinas
$250
see website for directions, detailed schedule, what to bring, and registration information
http://regenerativedesign.org/sheep-to-shawl
http://www.regenerativedesign.org/re-skilling-series

“In this 3 part series, discover the process of making raw wool into a wearable garment. With experienced local fiber artisans guiding you each step of the way, you will learn to discern the best fleeces of certain breeds, how to scour the fleece, how to card and comb to prepare for spinning and eventual knitting or felting. These hands-on workshops will show you the process of working with something that comes directly off the farm into a fashionable wearable garment – the most eco-friendly and natural way to clothe yourself!

Class 1 - Saturday, March 10, at Windrush Farm
From Raw Wool to Clean Fleeces with Mimi Luebbermann
You will start the series with a visit to a local sheep farm – Mimi Luebbermann's Windrush Farm in Chileno Valley, West Marin. Mimi will take you on a tour of her pastures to meet the flocks of Shetland Sheep and Corriedale/Finn sheep breeds. She will discuss what it takes to raise sheep sustainably and share with you her experiences being a sheep farmer. She will show and talk about the whole fleece and discuss the various fleece characteristics. You will get hands-on experience in skirting and scouring (washing) the fleece. You will leave with a part of the fleece you skirted and scoured, to dry at home and bring to the next class.

Class 2 - Sunday, April 1, at Commonweal Garden
Carding, Combing and Spinning your Fleece with Marlie de Swart
The first part of this class will be dedicated to showing and discussing ways of preparing your fleece so you can spin it or felt it. You will learn how to card and comb your clean raw wool into roving. Once you have carded your raw wool into roving it is ready to spin. In the afternoon you will learn about the various spindles and how to make your own drop spindle from recycled materials. You will learn how to spin your own yarn on a drop spindle. If there is time you could knit or crochet your first hand spun yarn.

Class 3 - Sunday, May 6, at Commonweal Garden
The Quick Hat Workshop - Felting with Heidi Paul
Felt is a non-woven cloth made by tangling and condensing wool; it is also incredibly versatile, insulating and sculptural.  Learn the ancient technique of feltmaking and contemporary design and blocking of hats by using a play ball as a resist.  We will use both local and Australian wool. The workshop covers wool for one hat, extra wool will be available for purchase. You will leave the workshop with a felt hat.

What is Re-Skilling?
Our ancestors, perhaps only a few generations back, were able to make what they needed for daily life or trade for what they needed with a skilled neighbor.
In this modern culture, most of us have lost the skills of basic craftsmanship. As we transition away from global consumerism and towards localized, earth-friendly economies, we need to reclaim these skills for ourselves and for our community.

Many of us have already started to re-skill around food - growing fresh vegetables in the backyard or cultivating a plot at a local community garden. This self-sustaining practice is deeply satisfying, and in the Bay Area there is a vibrant local economy around food that supports local farmers, garden teachers, restaurants, and burgeoning new vegetable landscaping businesses.

The Re-Skilling Series at RDI was inspired by our greater community's interest in learning more craftsmanship skills. Beyond growing our own vegetables, we can start re-skilling around food preservation, clothing, personal care products, furniture, and other needs of daily life.
Re-skilling requires that we connect more deeply to the natural world. It involves cultivating (or foraging) plants for basketry, building materials, medicine, general body care, dyes, food and clothing. It invites us into a closer relationship with domestic and wild animals, and asks that we pay more attention to the changing of the seasons and the cycles of the natural world. It also fosters a deeper gratitude for all that nature continues to provide us.
Re-skilling is happening all over the world - especially within communities engaged in the Transition Town  movement. Now is the time to reclaim these basic skills of local craftsmanship! We believe that joy of reclaiming these skills will increase our self-sufficiency and meet the growing needs for a local, regenerative economy.”

“Everything tastes better in the open air, around a fire. We want to inspire you to venture outdoors and eat wild all year round. From the simple dishes that sustained our ancestors to feasts fit for modern foodies, we draw from a rich repartoir of cooking methods and recipes that have been passed down to this day. Whether it´s Lebanese flatbread, hot smoked trout, chicken wrapped in clay, or waffles, chocolate bananas and Transylvanian tree cakes, all are simple and don’t need special tools.

We give instructions on selecting wood and making a fire, a range of ovens and cooking methods and suggestions for wild ingredients to forage.
We want to invite you to enjoy the thrill of cooking outdoors, with woodsmoke, storytelling, companionship and fresh air to sharpen the appetite. And maybe you will start feeling so much at home that you may consider Nature to become your living-room and kitchen.

“MusicSources presents:

The Blood Countess: Music from the time of Elizabeth Bathory (1560-1614)

In March, Bay Area medieval favorites Canconier return to Albany and Los Gatos to offer a complement to the group’s acclaimed Black Dragon program. This time, they venture ahead in time to perform music from the age of the infamous Countess Elizabeth Bathory, a Hungarian noblewoman of the late Renaissance.  Educated and cosmopolitan, she was ultimately accused of many horrible crimes, most notably that of bathing in the blood of her murdered servants in the belief that this would keep her eternally young.

Like Vlad Dracula before her, many of the crimes attributed to her are pure fiction added much later.  Was she history’s worst female serial killer?  Or a victim of politics that portrayed her as a monster to discredit the Bathory family name?  Regardless of the truth, her legend has endured through the centuries.

Hungary at the time was a curious melting pot of musical cultures, including Western Renaissance music, folk songs and epics from the medieval tradition, music of the Ottoman Turks (who encroached into Hungarian lands), music of the Roma (gypsies), and many others. This concert brings to life that vibrant variety, featuring 16th century songs of Sebestyan Tinodi and Balint Balassi, Hungarian folk music, Romany songs, traditional Ottoman music, and Lutheran music of the Bathory Court.

Tom Zajac joins the group again for what will surely be a memorable concert!”

“The latest in Ashkenaz’ popular series of kids’ shows, Soggy Sundays, presents eight consecutive weeks of afternoon shows to chase the winter fog and rain away (or lift spirits higher even if it’s not raining). The wide array of top family-oriented artists provides engaging entertainment for young children and parents every Sunday in February and March, playing music from around the world for dancing, jumping, and spinning on the best dance floor in the East Bay!

Today ClownSnotBombs Secret Circus debuts its newest circus show, The Mystery of the Jeweled Egg, a spy vs. spy mystery that will rid the world of the not funny. It’s a theatrical comedy show for a family audience with slapstick clowning, unicycling, acrobatics, juggling, hooping, and much much more! Added attraction Salane Schultz presents a children’s music set. Rarely seen without her accordion, Schultz offers songs full of catchy choruses and fresh views of life.

ClownSnotBombs is the Berkeley-based nonprofit circus group that performs at community events, parties, and celebrations throughout the Bay Area and the West Coast. Its cast ranges from world-renowned acrobats and circus performers to youth and first-time performers who are introduced to circus through the Secret Circus’s skill-shares, camps, and workshops.”

“Receive shamanic healing in a community setting
Feel the love and energy of the compassionate spirits
Socialize with shamanic healers and other participants
Experience non-dogmatic, non-religious, spirit based healing

We work in a community setting - everyone healing together.
We use drums and rattles to keep the beat of a trance state, plus bells and other sounds.
We bring you the healing of the compassionate spirits in whatever form that may take
We use appropriate touch, or the laying on of hands.
We remove negative energy and restore positive energy
We give people messages of hope and comfort from the spirits

All the clinic healers have studied shamanic healing with Stuart and Anne, and have developed deep relationships with the helping spirits.

Stuart Dole, PhD and Anne Hatfield both graduated from the Foundation for Shamanic Studies’ 3-year advanced training, where they studied directly with Michael Harner, author of Way of the Shaman, and Sandra Ingerman, author of Soul Retrieval and How to Heal Toxic Thoughts. They pursued further studies, learning shamanic methods from Tuva (Siberia), Tibet, Hawaii, Brazil, Africa, and the Celtic lands. They were also trained by Sandra Ingerman as shamanic teachers.

Anne has heard messages from the spirits from the time she was a child. She worked in the alternative health field for 25 years. Currently she is a yoga teacher and therapist, a massage therapist and a shamanic practitioner. Her passion is helping others explore those places where body and spirit meet.

Stuart was born into a decidedly atheist family and pursued a career in mathematics and science, earning his PhD in biophysics. But he developed an interest in spirituality, then lived in an ashram and practiced meditation devotedly for more than 30 years. He has subsequently pursued a wide array of methods for developing awareness, or enlightenment, and eventually found his way to shamanism. He is currently a meditation teacher and a shamanic bodyworker. He specializes in helping people become more present in their lives, through embodied awareness.”

Each month we will take two cards from the Tarot and spend time really getting to know them in a roundtable discussion where we can all learn, share insights and gain inspirations from one another. Pi Day
Wednesday, March 14, 1:00-3:00PM
Exploratorium, at the Palace of Fine Arts, 3601 Lyon Street, San Francisco, 415-561-0360
http://www.exploratorium.edu/pi/pi_schedule.html
http://www.piday.org

“Welcome to our twenty-fourth annual Pi Day! Help us celebrate this never-ending number (3.14159 . . .) and Einstein's birthday as well. On the afternoon of March 14 participate in pi-related activities and enjoy a piece of pie.

Founded at the Exploratorium by our own Prince of Pi, physicist Larry Shaw, Pi Day has become an international holiday, celebrated live and online all around the world.”

If you can’t make it to the event, you ac still celebrate the wonders of mathematics by calculating the diameter, or even the surface area, of a delicious pie.  Any flavour will do, as long as it's circular.

If you prefer to write dates in the day/month/year format, and prefer expressing irrational numbers as fractions,  you may celebrate on July 22: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi_Day

But March 14 is Einstein's birthday, so do something visionary, whether it's pi-related or not: http://web.visionlearning.com/events/Einstein_Mar14_2004.htm

Evening of Traditional Song
with Norman Kennedy
Saturday, March 17, 7:30-9:00PM
Castle in the Air, 1805 Fourth Street, Berkeley
Reservations required, please call 510-204-9801
$10 to $20 sliding scale, pay at the door
http://castleintheair.biz
http://www.arts.gov/honors/heritage/fellows/fellow.php?id=2003_03&type=bio

“Please join Castle in the Air in welcoming master folksinger Norman Kennedy on Saturday, March 17, as he shares an evening of Scottish ballads and folk songs. Norman has also promised us an ancient Irish song or two, in honor of Saint Patrick's Day.

The terms national treasure and living legend get bandied about perhaps more frequently than they should, but in Norman Kennedy we truly have both. He is a Scottish-born folksinger and hand-weaver who learned both trades from 'the old folk' in Aberdeen and the Outer Hebrides during his youth in the 1950s and '60s. Early on in his career he was recognized for his talent, and was chosen to represent Scotland at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.

Kennedy went on to build a career and, more importantly, a life defined by performing, weaving, and teaching since then, mainly in his adopted home of rural Vermont. Thanks to his efforts to preserve these traditions, in 2003 Norman was named an NEA National Heritage Fellow, the first Scotsman to be awarded this unparalleled distinction.

I've had the honor of knowing Norman Kennedy as a family friend for years, and have seen him perform at venues as varied as a sold-out show at Carnegie Hall to impromptu concerts in friends' living rooms. To say he has magic in his voice is no understatement - he sang a charm over my cup of tea while I was going through my difficult pregnancy with my first child, and she's now well on her way to becoming an accomplished Scottish folk musician in her own right.

Seating is very limited for this special event. Please call Castle in the Air at 510-204-9801 to make your reservation for one or more seats.”

CAYA’s Ball for the Bees
Saturday, March 31, 7:00-11:00PM
Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists, 1924 Cedar Street, Berkeley
$15 in advance, $20 at the door
http://www.eventbrite.com/event/3037562431
https://www.facebook.com/events/312492805476222

“Come As You Are Coven is proud to present The Ball for the Bees, a fundraiser to support local beekeepers and bee advocacy organizations. Honey bees are essential to our ecosystem and the sudden, unexplained disappearance of bees is an alarming warning bell to our society. We believe that with greater advocacy and local initiates, bee populations can be healthily restored and our mutual stewardship of the Earth’s resources can be brought back into balance. To that end, we are hosting this fundraiser.

The ball will be held at the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists at 1924 Cedar Street in Berkeley. Begin the evening with a beginner lesson in rotary waltz taught by Persephone, then dance the night away!  Enjoy a night of fun, fanciness (costumes admired but not required) and enchantment, all while benefitting efforts to support the bees and the development of sustainable resources for their care. There will be a raffle, tarot readers, light refreshments, and more.

7 pm: Vintage waltz lesson with vintage dance mistress Persephone
8 pm-11pm: Dancing and revelry

Light refreshments will be available
Cash bar with beer and wine

CAYA Coven’s current co-sponsors for this event are The Sacred Well, the Temple of Aphrodite and the Pagan Alliance.”
