All Hallows Read
Wednesday, October 31
wherever you please!
http://www.allhallowsread.com
http://www.neilgaiman.com/extras/AHR2012_poster.pdf

“All Hallow’s Read is a Hallowe’en tradition. It’s simply that in the week of Hallowe’en, or on the night itself, you give someone a scary book.
Scholars have traced its origins as far back as this blog post. http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2010/10/modest-proposal-that-doesnt-actually.html

Neil Gaiman says (well, said, in the aforementioned blog post):
“I propose that, on Hallowe'en or during the week of Hallowe'en, we give each other scary books. Give children scary books they'll like and can handle. Give adults scary books they'll enjoy.

I propose that stories by authors like John Bellairs and Stephen King and Arthur Machen and Ramsey Campbell and M R James and Lisa Tuttle and Peter Straub and Daphne Du Maurier and Clive Barker and a hundred hundred others change hands - new books or old or second-hand, beloved books or unknown. Give someone a scary book for Hallowe'en. Make their flesh creep...

Give a scary book.

If you don't know what kinds of books there are, or what would be appropriate for the person you're giving a book to, talk to a bookseller. They love to help, most of them. (The ones that don't tend not to be booksellers for long.) Talk to librarians. (Do not plan to give away their books though, unless they are having a library sale.)

That's it. That's my idea.

Scary book. Hallowe'en.

Who's with me?

Neil”

http://raggedwing.org/show/show_detail/25

"When did you last encounter death? How did it look, smell, taste, feel? What is it like on the other side of the wheel, just beyond where we can see? Will we let ourselves go there?

Within the Wheel is an original, immersive performance event inspired by the Tibetan Book of the Dead and interviews with hospice patients and workers that provides an encounter with death in a thoughtful, artful and meaningful way. The show will be an interactive journey through the great between and a reflection on the cycle of life, featuring original live music, theatrical performances and striking visual design.

Six interactive art and performance installations run continuously from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.  Audience members travel at their own pace, but we recommend at least an hour to experience the entire show.  Come early to see it in the light or later to see it with darkness and illumination.

Ragged Wing Ensemble’s Mission is to catalyze a deep cultural shift where artistic action is at the center of vital social change. We aim to connect artists and audiences through the ritual of live performance, exploring universal questions that span the ancient and contemporary.  We engage in the study and practice of Ensemble, collaboratively creating new, interdisciplinary works and activating the next generation of artistically engaged citizens.

We are the do-ers. The shape-shifters, the great adapters, mythic storytellers and visionaries. We make the rules and break the rules. We roll up our sleeves. Take on big questions.  Design the world we want to live in and then build it. We walk into the mouth of fear. We cultivate a discipline of courage.”

http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/270089

“Brothers, Edgar and Allan, both fall in love with Lenore.  She chooses one brother and then requests something fashionable as a gift for her wedding day.  This choice sets in motion the unfolding of events, in gothic, karmic fashion with a live musical soundtrack that covers the wide range of expression available to the rhythm and blues based artist.  The songs were actually written with the history of American pop music in mind.  The Raven utilizes an evolution of styles, from the mid-50's sound of the Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly to late-70's punk, that shadows the arc of the storyline.

Other Elements:  Lost Love, Karma, Obsession, Reincarnation, Hilarity, Murder, Love Triangle, Betrayal, Dancing, Redemption, Madness, Truth, Revenge, Hope, Jealousy, Bliss

We're certain that you'll enjoy this new voice in musical theatre!”

“The Story

For generations, the Grimaldi family has thrilled audiences the world over. From the opera houses of old Europe to America's silver screen, they were the quintessential showbiz family. Now the last surviving member of the Grimaldis is dead and the auction house of Sutter and Son is liquidating their estate.

As our show begins, we meet Walter Sutter, a friendly and somewhat awkward young man who is the block clerk for the auction house and the son in Sutter and Son. The auction business bores Walter and he dreams of a life in show business, a dream discouraged by his rather gruff and overly practical father Hirum Sutter.

When the ghosts of the Grimaldis start to haunt the auction house with their dazzling performances, Walter not only learns what it really means to be in show biz, but he also uncovers dark secrets about his own destiny.

The Grimaldis may be dead, but the show must go on.

The Show

The Grimaldis is a new story written by Dane Ballard and Ady Abbot and directed by Christian Utzman. The script celebrates the triumphs and tragedies of a life in show business from the eerie perspective of a family of performing ghosts.

Featuring original songs by John Woods, The Grimaldis is a mix of cabaret, circus, improv and musical theatre. The experience is immersive with the audience finding performances happening all around them. With the absence of the fourth wall, the characters interact directly with the guests, mingling with the audience throughout the show. Even the food and drink is presented as part of the story, a sort of ‘theatre amuse bouche’ to pull the audience further into the experience.”

“During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in the US and around the world. With their Mo’s, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

Once registered at www.movember.com, men start Movember 1st clean shaven. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their gallantry and valor by either throwing their own Movember party or attending one of the infamous Gala Partés held around the world by Movember, for Movember.”

Witches Ball and Samhain Celebration
presented by the Sonoma County Pagan Network
facilitated by Leeanen Sidhe
Friday, November 2, 7:00PM
Luther Burbank Art and Garden Center, 2050 Yulupa Avenue, Santa Rosa
$5-$10 suggested donation, no one turned away for lack of funds
http://www.scpagans.org/witchball.html

"Honor for the Dead, Blessings for the Earth

The doors open at 7:00; Ritual will begin at 7:45. Costume or ritual garb is encouraged.

Our Samhain ritual will be guided by Leeanen Sidhe. The focus of the ritual will be on honoring those who have passed through the veil this year, opening ourselves to the wisdom of our ancestors, and then sending a blessing spell for the Earth.

The loss of a loved one or friend is never easy. For those of us who are left behind and especially for those of us who held the hand of the dying, death and the grief that follows can be very painful and cause us to sometimes feel angry or leave us with a sense of great emptiness. But if those of us left behind could see things from the perspective of the dying, perhaps it might bring us comfort.

The wisdom of our ancestors is vast and goes back to the time when humans were more in touch with the cycles of the earth. This time of year in many cultures marked the end of the old year and the beginning of the new. But this is more than just a new year that is coming. We stand on the cusp of a time of great change and our Mother needs us and our love more than ever. For all that she gives to us, let us give Her something in return in the form of a blessing for enlightenment, healing, and change.

There will be an altar for the beloved dead. Everyone is invited to bring something (a picture, trinket, etc.) from a loved one who has passed-on from this life, (whether human or animal), to place on the altar during the event (to be taken home, of course).

Dinner With The Dead
Samhain is not only a time to honor our dead, but we also mark the New Year and celebrate our abundant harvest. Let's enjoy a bountiful meal together in the midst of our dearly departed. Why not make one of Nonna's favorite recipes? We ask that you bring a potluck dish to share that serves 4-6 people and/or a non-alcoholic brew. Please bring your own place setting. There will be hot water available for tea.

Hat Contest
Once again this year, we will be holding a contest for the best Witch's or Wizard's hat. Whether it's something you make yourself or purchase and embellish, bring it, wear it, have it judged and maybe win a prize!”

About Day of the Dead:
Dia de los Muertos is a traditional Meso-American holiday dedicated to the ancestors; it honors both death and the cycle of life. In Mexico, neighbors gather in local cemeteries to share food, music, and fun with their extended community, both living and departed. The celebration acknowledges that we still have a relationship with our ancestors and loved ones that have passed away.

In San Francisco, Day of the Dead has been celebrated in the Mission district since the early 70s with art, music, performances and a walking procession, which help us contemplate our existence and mortality - a moment to remember deceased friends and family, and our connections beyond our immediate concerns.

Day of the Dead is an alcohol free event with no vendors or booths of any type. Please honor this tradition and do not attempt to sell goods on the premises of Garfield Park.”

Lend your spirit as we renew the Sovereignty of the land at the turning of the year.

Feast Details:
An ancient period-style Celtic feast will be laid out in three courses, providing the structure for the evening's ritual. We have selected recipes for the feast that closely match the kinds of foods our ancestors would have eaten, relying as much as possible on fresh, local and seasonal ingredients, with an eye to what would have been available to the ancients.

Appetizer: Oat cakes with fresh apples and honey
First course: Blackberry and sweet pea salad; medieval leeks and mushrooms
Main course: Celtic pork and apple stew with hazelnuts and mushrooms (and meat-free version for vegetarians) ; Iron Age creamy peas; fresh barley bread
Dessert course: Seasonal fruit and berries with cream, honey, hazelnuts and rose petals

Mead, cider, and ale will be available as well as a non-alcoholic cider. A complimentary glass of mead or cider will be included with all tickets (including non-feast tickets) ; additional beverages will be available for purchase.

Please note menu may be subject to change based on availability of ingredients, and updates will be posted to the Facebook event page.

Ritual Details:
The Samhain ritual will be enacted in three parts: the first dedicated to the Ancestors, the second to the Gods and the Fey, and the third dedicated to the Descendents, those who will come after us. We will open the Otherworld gateway and invite the Mighty Ones to join us in feast and celebration as we enact the ancient stories of their heroic deeds: Brave warriors who ventured out to meet the host of the Sidhe on the haunted eve of Samhain. The Morrigan's gift of prophecy and blessing for the mighty Dagda, on the eve of Samhain, when the Tuatha De Danaan prepared to fight for the sovereignty of Ireland. And the untold story of our own generation's heroes, and those to come after us.

An altar will be set up where you are welcome to place pictures and mementos of your own Ancestors and beloved Dead, and places will be set at the tables where we may feed them.

Sovereignty Rite at Lake Merritt
Saturday, November 3, 11:00AM
Meet at the gazebo inside Lakeside Park (just past Children's Fairyland) , Bellevue Ave off Grand Ave, Oakland, CA

During the course of the evening Samhain feast and ritual, a special sword will be charged with a blessing for Sovereignty, by the power of the Ancestors, Gods and Mighty ones, and our own prayers and blessings of all participating. Those who wish can rejoin us the following morning on the shore of Lake Merritt, to dedicate this sword of Sovereignty, and cast it into the lake as a sacrificial offering for the renewal of sovereignty for our land and people, following the ancient tradition of Celtic peoples who deposited sacrificial offerings of armor, weapons and jewelry into lakes and sacred wells throughout Europe.

We are seeking a sword to dedicate for this purpose! If you or someone you know would be willing to donate a sword for the noble purpose of restoring sovereignty to your land and people, please contact us on the Coru Cathubodua Facebook page, or by email to mara.rua@gmail.com. “

Women's Dream Quest: Dreaming Transformation
with Judith Tripp
Friday-Saturday, November 2-3, 7:00PM Friday - 11:00AM Saturday
Grace Cathedral, 1100 California Street, San Francisco
$165
http://www.circleway.com/quests.htm
http://veriditas.org/calendar?eventId=508318&EventViewMode=EventDetails
http://www.gracecathedral.org

“The format of the Dream Quest is quite simple. We gather as a large group- usually about 100 women. We learn several beautiful chants that we will use throughout the experience. We spend time greeting each other and preparing to enter the sacred space of the Quest. We then move to the Labyrinth and do a ceremony with song, movement and guided meditation that sets the tone and creates a safe and expansive environment for each woman to have her dream as well as a warm and nurturing environment for us all to experience a community of heart.

We then move into small groups facilitated by able women in the community. We choose these groups by randomly drawing a card representing a quality that creates a theme in each group. The small groups are an essential part of the experience. Here women are invited to share their stories and to be witnessed as they quest for their dreams. We encourage women to consider all their experiences in the event as part of their dream.

After an hour of small group interaction, it is time for walking the Labyrinth, receiving healing, meditating, praying, journaling, singing, creating art or dolls, or even going to sleep. We want women to feel free to follow their hearts and experiences. This period lasts until the lights dim, but some women choose to walk the Labyrinth during the night or continue their vigil or meditation.

In the morning, the women are awakened with a song, and spend the first morning hour in meditation, body prayer, (movement, Yoga stretches etc.), or journaling. They then meet in the small groups again. A final large group ceremony is held on the Labyrinth and the process of taking what we've learned back into the world is begun.

We meet in the same small groups over breakfast and prepare a skit to communicate the message each group wants to share. After the performance, each woman receives a gift and we dance and sing a final closing.”

She Stoops to Conquer
presented by Butterfield 8
Friday-Sunday, November 2-4, Friday and Saturday 8:00PM, Sunday 3:00PM
Final week
Cue Productions Live, 1835 Colfax Street, Concord
$20
http://www.b8company.com/events.htm

“What happens when you combine a practical joker, an ‘arranged’ courtship, and a secret romance? You have She Stoops to Conquer, Oliver Goldsmith's comedy of  miscommunication and mistaken identities. Audiences responded favorably to the ‘new style’ comedy when it debuted in 1773, and have continued to do so ever since.  She Stoops to Conquer remains one of the few 18th century plays to be regularly performed for modern audiences.

The Mission of Butterfield 8 Theatre Company is to provide audiences a fresh take on classic plays, and foster the creation of new works.

Our Vision is to present audiences with examples of both ends of the theatrical spectrum: new productions of classic works, focusing in particular on text-driven plays (such as the works of Shakespeare), and new works devised by the company or written by local playwrights.  Our work often examines perceptions of gender, both within the context of the play and the larger context of society as a whole.  We strive to create an immersive environment, believing the audience’s experience starts when they buy the ticket, and shouldn't end when they leave the theatre. We honor that the audience has come for a live theatre experience to engage with a story or an idea; to be taken on a journey. This is our responsibility, and our craft.”

Do something appropriately Plutonic/Scorpionic.
Gaze deeply into the darkest corners of your own soul.  Re-invent yourself and rise, Phoenix-like, from the ashes of your previous life.  Or perhaps take a bath in really good, really dark, molten chocolate.

Just don't you ever lower yourself, forgetting all your standards.

"Whether or not we have recently lost loved ones, we all carry a heavy load of grief and stress simply by living in these times. When we can’t find ways to drop the weight of this emotional burden, we can become hopeless, bitter or numb. Letting it go makes room for a new kind of imagination to enter. The release of these emotions requires a safe space and a caring community.

We will take a full day to help each other remember our ancestors and our personal and collective losses. In some traditions, this is the time of year when the veil between our world and the unseen world is thin; it is an opportune time to complete any unfinished business that prevents us from fully participating in life.  This will be a day of mourning and remembrance, but also of great beauty and celebration. There will be poetry, storytelling, drumming, altar-building and chanting from African, Celtic, Mexican and other traditions."

Dreaming for the Great Turning
Saturday, November 3, 10:00AM-1:00PM
The Dream Institute of Northern California, 1672 University Avenue, Berkeley, 510-845-1767
$35
http://www.dream-institute.org/calendar.html#turning

“The year 2012 may be pivotal in the historic process known as the Great Turning, a global transition from an ethos of conquest and domination to one of cooperation and interdependence. Join us in exploring this epochal moment using Culture Dreaming, a method likened to a group shamanic journey or active imagination. Participants tell individual night dreams that emerge in a light trance; these are then woven into a new, big dream or co-created narrative, which is explored for its collective implications. The session includes a period for dream re-entry to obtain guidance on questions of personal meaning. In addition to opening a window into the vast, often hidden dynamics of cultural transformation, Culture Dreaming provides participants with a living experience of deep interconnectedness.

Meredith Sabini, PhD, Director of The Dream Institute, is a licensed psychologist who specializes in dream consultation and training.

Richard Russo, MA, past president of the IASD and editor of its publication, DreamTime, is an artist and dream educator with over thirty years experience. He is Creative Advisor at The Dream Institute.”

“Don’t miss the November edition of our Saturday morning Patchwork Series of kids’ concerts, a special treat featuring the astounding Fratello Marionettes and the Bay Area’s beloved Trinidad-born musical storyteller, Asheba.

You may have caught one of their ultra-popular performances in local libraries or art festivals, in which case you already know it: run, don’t walk to see the Fratello Marionettes work their magic! Using the traditional American cabaret style of manipulation (in which the puppeteer performs in full view of the audience), Kevin Menegus and Fred C. Riley III write and perform with intricately handcrafted marionettes in shows geared for children of all ages. Today’s performance, set to Camille Saint-Saens’ fanciful Carnival of the Animals, interweaves three classic fables, The Three Little Pigs, The Tortoise and the Hare, and The Ugly Duckling.

Asheba is a musical storyteller who specializes in calypso, the musical and folkloric oral tradition of his homeland, Trinidad. Stories of hope and happiness are the focus of his songs, which range from original lullabies to up-tempo tunes to remakes of classics such as Itsy Bitsy Spider and You Are My Sunshine. Any Asheba show also features children and parents alike joyfully singing, clapping, and dancing along! Now based in Oakland, Asheba has been performing at children's play spaces, museums, schools, hospitals, and festivals for the past 11 years.”

“Waltz the night away in a beautiful candlelit ballroom with the San Francisco Bay Area’s most glamorous Undead at the 19th Annual Le Bal des Vampires.

Suggested costume is evening dress of the century and country of your ‘rebirth.’  This may include dress uniform, period costume (authentic or fantasy), or vintage or modern evening dress. There is no dress code for the ball (We certainly don’t expect Spike to attend in black tie!), but you will see some of the most gorgeous and creative costumes of the social season at Le Bal des Vampires.

This year there will once again be simultaneous dancing on two separate floors:
Our band in the elegant upstairs ballroom is the stylish but always dashing chamber ensemble Bangers and Mash.  As usual, haunting waltzes dominate the program, but the evening will feature a variety of dance music from across the centuries - from 18th century Baroque contredanses to 19th century Victorian rotary and Viennese waltzes, polkas, and mazurkas; to elegant early 20th century tangos, blues, and fox trots and even some classic rock and roll Swing.  Please note that the band’s first dance set will start at 7:45PM sharp - 15 minutes earlier than usual.  The dance sets will be unusually long, even by Bangers and Mash’s high standards, so if you do plan to dance, please be certain to wear shoes or boots you can actually dance in.

For those preferring a more modern style of dance music and free-style dancing as well as partner dancing, join us downstairs at the Nightfall Club for a wonderfully varied repertoire of music to stir the blood and spirit from 6:30 p.m. to Midnight.  Hosted by our principal DJ Dark Moon and guest DJ Persephone, Nightfall also features a no-host (cash) bar.
Our half-time show in the ballroom is a performance by the celebrated Le Theatre des Vampires. Not recommended for the faint of heart but highly recommended for fans of the genre.

You may also enjoy quiet conversation, Tarot readings, and photography opportunities in the Victorian Parlor.

As vampires do not eat ... food, there will be no food or snacks available at the bar, and the management does not allow any outside food or drink to be brought into the hall. We strongly suggest that you dine before the ball.  Fortunately, Alameda has a variety of excellent restaurants, especially on Park Street, which is within walking distance of the ball.”

Goddess Clothing Exchange
Sunday, November 4, 2:00-4:00PM
LoveJourney Temple in Sebastopol
(RSVP to pegasusjj@sbcglobal.net or for address)
women only
http://lovejourneytantra.com

“Please sort through your wonderful stuff and bring only your best items - those you think your fellow Goddesses will love!

We expect a big turn-out, so all the help we can get is much appreciated.  If you can commit even an hour or two as volunteer, it will help us sooooo much.  It will be a fun atmosphere of women trying on all kinds of new things and taking home special treasures.

For those who are new to an exchange, here's the basics: Sort through your clothes to create a give-away pile. Bring the best of those to share: clothes that either no longer fit or just aren't your style and are in good repair.  Come try on stuff, hang out with your sisters, enjoy the hot tubs, & go home with great new clothes, purses, shoes, jewelry, books, etc.   Take only what calls to you of what others bring, and only for yourself or your child.

A FEW REQUESTS TO MAKE IT RUN SMOOTHLY:
Bring clothes and shoes in good condition that you think others would be excited to receive
Bring clothes on hangers, if possible
Goddess music, jewelry, shoes, purses, and other finery welcome
Make sure garments are freshly laundered and shoes are clean
Let us know ahead of time if you have clothing racks we can borrow
As always carpool if at all possible, and bring your "sisters"

Start looking through your closets now and getting excited! It will be here soon! We'll all play dress up and have the joy of watching other women's faces light up when they find some great outfit, perhaps one you brought.”

“Learn new and traditional practices for American folk magic, known also as Hoodoo, Rootwork, Hedge Witchery and Conjure.

Discussions and training will include the following topics:
Conjuring energy and spirits from herbs, stones, minerals, and animal curios.
Working with the ancestors and the use of graveyard dirt and bone curios.
Techniques and uses for psalms, seals and personal sigils.
Formularies and hands on instruction on concocting oils, powders, baths and other magical apothecaries.

This class plots a course intended to help you evolve as a Rootworker, covering history, spiritual cleansing, psychic development, the arts of hexing and healing, building relationships with the divine world around us, and much more.

For this class we will examine how to conjure the power found in herbs. As a foundation for making our own apothecary products throughout the class we will work with herbal allies to create an herb blend used for money drawing. We will approach this work according to the Doctrine of Signatures and shamanic exploration of the spirits within herbs. We will also examine various other methods traditionally used for money drawing.

Chas Bogan is an artist and mystic, having studied and practiced many diverse forms of metaphysics for the past 25 years. That experience is reflected in his art, which ranges from the design of unique divination tools to various other forms of sacred expression. His shamanic talents have lead him to create various collections of spiritual supplies crafted for Modern Conjure Brand, such as baths; oils; powders; waters; and more. He is available for consultations and spiritual work by appointment Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays; during which
he may be serving my clients in my capacity as a Reiki Master Teacher; Rootworker; Tarot Reader; Conjure Doctor. He teaches various magical arts including the Feri Tradition of which he is an initiate.”

“Awaken the psychic within and open up your personal doors of perception.  In this hands-on, experiential ritual-class series, we will create a sacred container together to explore the Mysteries of the Dark Moon and the Shadow/Hidden Self through ritual and divination arts such as scrying, tarot, astrology, and Enneagram.  This class is limited to 11 women and is intentionally constructed for both beginning and accomplished Practitioners.

Requirements:
We will gather together on the three evenings noted above, and will continue our communication and explorations on a private email list in-between gatherings. You will also create and perform a Solitary Dark Moon ritual the evening of Thursday, December 13.  To continue flowing with our collective magick, you are highly encouraged to attend our annual Sisterhood of the Moon Dedication/Imbolc ritual on the Dark Moon/Lunar Imbolc on Saturday, February 9.

Gathering time and informal potluck dinner begins at 6:30PM for each meeting; class/ritual begins promptly at 7:00PM.  Our intention is to end class and open the circle by 10:00PM.

This class is for all women, no matter her level of experience with group ritual or Dark Moon magick.  Please email us with your questions or to sign up. Registration ends at Samhain, October 31, so that you have time to prepare yourself for our first gathering on November 13.  A list of materials and a syllabus will be emailed to you by Samhain.  We ask for a commitment to attend all three classes in this series.
