Do you judge and hurt yourself unnecessarily? Is it hard for you to just relax and enjoy each day? It can be joyful and loving all the time! This workshop combines wisdom, meditation, and introspection.

Dia de los Muertos San Francisco
Wednesday, November 2, 7:00PM
Parade starts at 22nd Street and Bryant Street, San Francisco
and leads to 26th Street and Harrison Street
ending at the Festival of Altars in Garfield Park, 6:30-10:30PM
http://dayofthedeadsf.org

"Dia de los Muertos is a traditional Meso-American holiday dedicated to the ancestors; it honors both death and the cycle of life. In Mexico, neighbors gather in local cemeteries to share food, music, and fun with their extended community, both living and departed. The celebration acknowledges that we still have a relationship with our ancestors and loved ones that have passed away.

In San Francisco, Day of the Dead has been celebrated since the early 70s with art, music, performances and a walking procession, which help us contemplate our existence and mortality - a moment to remember deceased friends and family, and our connections beyond our immediate concerns.”

"Whether or not we have recently lost loved ones, we all carry a heavy load of grief and stress simply by living in these times. When we can’t find ways to drop the weight of this emotional burden, we can become hopeless, bitter or numb. Letting it go makes room for a new kind of imagination to enter. The release of these emotions requires a safe space and a caring community.

We will take a full day to help each other remember our ancestors and our personal and collective losses. In some traditions, this is the time of year when the veil between our world and the unseen world is thin; it is an opportune time to complete any unfinished business that prevents us from fully participating in life.  This will be a day of mourning and remembrance, but also of great beauty and celebration. There will be poetry, storytelling, drumming, altar-building and chanting from African, Celtic, Mexican and other traditions."

Soapmaking Basics
part of the Re-Skilling Workshop series
Saturday, November 5, 10:00AM-5:00PM
Commonweal Garden at the Regenerative Design Institute, Bolinas
$95
see website for directions, detailed schedule, and registration information
http://regenerativedesign.org/courses-events/re-skilling-soapmaking-basics
http://www.regenerativedesign.org/re-skilling-series

“In this hands-on, fully engaged class you will make five pounds of vegetarian soap from scratch, using the traditional cold process method and a special "zipper" recipe of coconut and California Olive Oil. This simple, but specially developed recipe is easily adaptable to your family's needs back at home. We have a treasure trove of tools, molds, toys, herbs, flowers, grains, books, and others soap samples to inspire your creativity and thus customize your work.

The class includes a discussion of chemistry, safety, recipe adaptations, French milling, glycerine soap, fillers, and superfatting.  We will also focus on ecological and bioregional issues of home, small scale and local production for community health and vitality.
All participants will leave with the know-how to make their own soaps at home, as well as a 5-pound batch of hand-crafted soap to take home.

What is Re-Skilling?
Our ancestors, perhaps only a few generations back, were able to make what they needed for daily life or trade for what they needed with a skilled neighbor.
In this modern culture, most of us have lost the skills of basic craftsmanship. As we transition away from global consumerism and towards localized, earth-friendly economies, we need to reclaim these skills for ourselves and for our community.

Many of us have already started to re-skill around food - growing fresh vegetables in the backyard or cultivating a plot at a local community garden. This self-sustaining practice is deeply satisfying, and in the Bay Area there is a vibrant local economy around food that supports local farmers, garden teachers, restaurants, and burgeoning new vegetable landscaping businesses.

The Re-Skilling Series at RDI was inspired by our greater community's interest in learning more craftsmanship skills. Beyond growing our own vegetables, we can start re-skilling around food preservation, clothing, personal care products, furniture, and other needs of daily life.
Re-skilling requires that we connect more deeply to the natural world. It involves cultivating (or foraging) plants for basketry, building materials, medicine, general body care, dyes, food and clothing. It invites us into a closer relationship with domestic and wild animals, and asks that we pay more attention to the changing of the seasons and the cycles of the natural world. It also fosters a deeper gratitude for all that nature continues to provide us.
Re-skilling is happening all over the world - especially within communities engaged in the Transition Town  movement. Now is the time to reclaim these basic skills of local craftsmanship! We believe that joy of reclaiming these skills will increase our self-sufficiency and meet the growing needs for a local, regenerative economy.”

Journey of the Divine Feminine
Workshop Series for Women

and one more Saturday, and December 3

$85 per workshop
Women only
for more information or to register, please call 415-448-7043
http://www.divinecreativejourney.com/473-2/workshops-groups

“The time will come when it will be auspicious to be born into the body of a woman.  This is a ‘prophecy’ that came in novel I am working on called Daughter of Beautiful Promises.  Not long after, I was deeply moved by a Buddhist documentary where an aging nun was crying, wishing to be reborn as a man so she could practice and become enlightened.  I strongly believe that now is the time when it is auspicious to be born into the body of a woman.
Women are being called to come into their full power, to awaken the divine feminine qualities of love, compassion, forgiveness, patience and wisdom that the world so needs to come back into balance. The Dalai Lama, Mata Amritanandamayi and many other spiritual leaders and thinkers are calling women to guide the world into a new era by bringing forward the innate qualities of the divine feminine into ourselves, our communities and the world.  It is my deepest heart’s desire to answer this call and be a part of a positive change.
As women in this modern world, we are often struggling with day to day existence, trying to balance families, work, friendships, creative pursuits and spiritual practice, and yet there is this calling to offer.  Maybe answering the calling begins by not buying into what has been created for us.  I believe we need to find a place of stillness in the constant motion and noise to be able to deeply listen and hear the inner voice of guidance.  We need places of gathering women together for support, envisioning and creating.
We are blessed with having many amazing women teachers and leaders who have broken new ground, role models who can inspire us.  Yet all of us can participate in this change in small or large ways.  What is your vision?  As a woman, and perhaps as a mother, grandmother, a wife, an artist, a healer, a lover of life, what is it that you want most, for yourself, for others and for the world?   And how do you think we as women can walk the path?”

The morning session will consist of a lecture/slideshow, while the afternoon will be spent in the field identifying, harvesting, and preparing an herbal remedy.  Anyone curious about the healing potential of our local flora will find this class not only insightful, but self empowering as well.  You will leave with your own herbal remedy for the fall cold and flu season to take home.

“Rage is fierce clarity and untapped fuel; a natural resource of misused energy that requires our loving attention. Embraced with compassion, the trapped energies of rage are released and become an intimate teacher of balance, integrity, and resilience, greatly enhancing our relationships and our service to the world.

In this afternoon of fun and insight, we embrace rage as a pathway to emotional liberation. Through group sharing, mindfulness, and ceremony, we are guided inward to make peace with aspects of our lives that are dishonored. We discover our Disguises of Rage and open to the wisdom behind them. We expand perceptions of right and wrong, learn how to accept and forgive, and rest more in body and mind.

Ruth King is a recognized authority on Emotional Wisdom offering lectures and retreats nationwide. She has been a dedicated practitioner of Theravada and Vajrayana Buddhism since 1992 offering annual retreats at Spirit Rock Meditation Center (CA), Insight Meditation Community (DC), New York Insight, BuddhaFest (DC), and East Bay Meditation Center (CA). Ms. King holds a master’s in clinical psychology from John F. Kennedy University (CA), is an Interfaith Officiate of Universal Life Church, and is the author of the groundbreaking book Healing Rage—Women Making Inner Peace Possible, foreword by Spirit Rock founder Jack Kornfield, endorsed by Pulitzer Prize Winner Alice Walker, and an O Magazine Nugget. Originally from Berkeley, CA, Ms. King lives with life partner Dr. Barbara Riley and cat Mr. Socks in Charlotte, NC.”

“In many mystical traditions the mask has been a powerful symbol of realization and promise. It has been used as a tool for connecting to collective wisdom, channeling protective energy, divination, restoring health, and sacred initiatory rites.

The ritual of mask-making, when done with focus and intention, is a powerful way to connect your everyday persona with your inner, more intuitive, higher self. It's also fun!

Join Sue for a mask-making workshop this fall, the weekend of November 12-13, at her home in west Oakland. This workshop will be small by intention: no more than seven participants.

*What is this Pay what you wish/what you can thing? you ask. Read on: Sculptors, shamans and coaches offer two-day mask-making workshops for $199–$225. For this workshop, you are invited to choose the fee that's the right fit for you. You won't be asked to pay your balance until the workshop is complete.
